if thibs couldn't encourage Kat or Brunson to become better defenders, then i guess it was never meant to be,

Color me shocked. Didn't think the Knicks would go down this route, at least not this summer.

Hope they have someone decent in mind that is an actual good fit with this roster. I wasn't much of a Thibs believer in general but he did impress me a bit during this playoff run, enough to think he wasn't going to get fired this summer at least.

I can't say that if the Knicks pick the wrong replacement that it will bite them having replaced Thibs because he simply hasn't proven enough.

He's coached in three conference finals. He may never coach a team to title but the idea his teams do awful in the regular season is just false.

I don't know why the NBA has this culture that you're a post-season loser unless you have a ring. But it is bad and the binary outlook causes people to do poor analysis.

Eh, the team was in a different place then. Coaches aren’t just fired for their flaws, they’re fired, and hired, cause they fit the timeline of where the franchise is at that moment.

Team is now past the building stage and full steam ahead on contending, which requires a reevaluation of what you need from the coach.

Can't wait to hear RealGM tell us how none of this matters because Thibs is bad man.

i mean Denver fired their coach right before the playoffs and it was the coach that helped them win a chip.

Sure, but NY just made the ECF. Denver took a step back, and the locker-room seemed to have issues. But I thought Denver was wrong in firing Malone too when that move was made.

I wonder if the individual that traded Bridges for 5 first rounds will be fired? doubt it.

Been a staunch Thibs defender here since his Twolves days and thought he did a good job this past season. We need better than good, though. We need somebody willing/able to completely re-envision this team on offense and on defense. Three high-level defenders in the starting five and two on the bench, plus two high-level scorers in the starting five and three others able to step up at any given time--that said, the parts never worked together smoothly, and our bench seemed consistently lost.

As I've posted before, Thibs was our Mark Jackson. Here's hoping we find our Steve Kerr--the young, hungry coach who sees a way to make all these parts fit in a new way.
RIP magnumt--you're literally why I'm still here on these boards.
RIP The Hater--keep up the good fight in the great beyond.

As a bulls fan you should know why he was fired. Thibs is a regular season merchant, but come playoff time he gets outcoached every damn time when it matters the most. Not to mention he is stuck in his ways

Best bad coach in recent NBA history? Or just the worst good coach?

- Won 65% of his games in Chicago... but it was clear when it was time to go.
- Won 48% of his games and broke the 14-year playoff drought in MN (more impressive than it might seem). But he had hit the wall... partially bc he was an inept GM.
- Team record improved in each of past 3 years in NY. 4 playoffs in 5 years... after team hadn't made it in 7 years.

He's posted a better record than the previous coach at each stop... but seems to have about a 5-year-window...

[Note: 58% overall winning percentage (47% in playoffs... also not terrible). 10 playoffs in 13 seasons.]

How do you keep a head coaching job in the NBA?

He was running players into the ground and he struggled to find a working lineup in the pacers series. Carlisle out coached him

He has his flaws but they are winning playoff games. The Bulls have been a bad team ever since he was canned.

My thought as well. Not something you should be doing unless you have a very specific vision for what comes next and you have specific coaching candidates in mind you think could do better.

It may well be the right call and still the Knicks may not get back to the Conference Finals this generation, in which case it won't seem right.
