I’d say Luka needs a back to back championship run as the best player in the world and Ohtani and the Dodgers have to get eliminated in the playoffs this season.

Yup Dodgers have closed the gap in popularity. Actually I'd say they're even more mainstream right now than the Lakers. I'm judging this strictly on the girls I match with on dating apps lol. More want to go to Dodger games than Laker games and that is a trend that started in recent years. Of course, this is a basketball forum so posters here from L.A. are going to be more Laker-centric. But I bet if you randomly asked Angelenos around the city, they could name more Dodger players than Laker players.

A big part of this is the Dodgers are contenders every year. If the Lakers were a true championship contender, which they are not, then it could swing back the other way. But as it stands now, the Dodgers been competing for, and winning, championships for quite a while now. They have momentum on their side. It's going to take a lot for Luka to take Shohei's mantel. Not to mention, Shohei is a once in a lifetime player. We won't see another like him for 100 years.

Winning a Word Series didn’t raise Ohtani’s profile much. Meanwhile Luka would be LA royalty with a title.

Haha yup. There's also been surveys showing the Dodgers edging out the Lakers in popularity and even besides the surveys you'll simply see more bystanders wearing Dodger's jerseys than Laker's jerseys. Dodgers have a lot more home games that are just more affordable comparatively for the majority of the LA demographic which I also think has something to do with it.

Not really sure because Luka’s teammate is the face of the NBA and has been for many years.

I think a better question is, will Ohtani ever be as popular as Lebron.

Not possible - Luka can’t surpass a player that could be the goat of baseball. Not top 20 but number 1

Luka fighting to be toP 5 this year and SO fighting to the best to ever play all time.

It’s not even close- Lebron is Otani’s rival not Luka

I honestly think Lakers fans will tire of Luka and his unhealthy lifestyle/lack of professionalism within 3 seasons.

So, Laker fans and the city of LA adore Lebron James? Spoken like a true fan of the Lakers? (I think not)

You can judge that by how many murals Luka will have compared to Ohtani in the city of LA. Right now Ohtani has a lot more and rightfully so.

If only a lakers fan should answer, maybe this should be in the lakers sub…?

I honestly don’t like the lakers and unfortunately I’m a wizards fan.

But it doesn’t change that Otani is one of the biggest sport icons on earth and by far, much better now and all time compared to Luka at their respective sports.

It’s not close - not really close when it comes to talent or being box office or being great in an all time sense.

This ain’t a knock on Luka - KD- and Hardens whole careers are surpassed by Otani’s potential to be the best ever

0? I can't even name a current MLB player. I didn't know anyone under 50 was still watching.

LA is a front runner city. Whoever is more successful at the time will be more popular. If Luka wins a championship next year and the Dodgers don't Luka will immediately be more popular.

He’s going to retire with the same amount as Harden. Same player.
