Except Avdija broke out on a descending contract which might be the best in the league. The kind of contract you should sign this guy to so he isn't already making more than Avdija, who'd done way more at at that point. Paying rotation money to a deep bench guy.

I'd actually be more comfortable with the deal if Miami had a team option/partial guarantee for the 4th year. I am not as optimistic about Jovic's upside as some on the Heat board are, but I don't think he does any worse than Duncan Robinson did once Robinson signed his outrageous deal (that did include a partial guarantee in the last year!).

How had Avdija done way more? He got his extension before his 4th season. Coming off his 3rd season he averaged 9/6/3 on 54% TS. Jovic just got his extension averaging 11/4/3 on 60% TS after his 3rd season. Avdija had better health but I fail to see how Avdija had proven more outside of better health. Avdija showed more defensively, Jovic showed more offensively.

Avdija’s current output to contract ratio shouldn’t factor into Jovic. Avdija is a massive bargain right now so (possibly) lesser players could get paid more than him and they would still be on “fair” contracts.

Robinson doesn’t really seem like a fair comp. Robinson was making twice as much as Jovic will make relative to the cap. Here were/are their salaries relative to the cap:

Robinson: ~17%

Jovic: ~9%

My point was that even though Robinson was an overpaid, limited player, he still was a solid rotation player for Miami and I think we'll see something similar with Jovic even if he never fulfills the expectations the organization has for him. In other words, I think this past season is kind of his floor.

Why though? I don’t understand why these teams are so quick to sign their own guys to these huge deals. Everyone is blowing their money there’s barely going to be anything left for free agents. He wouldn’t have gotten that on the open market.

It's not a huge deal tho..the non tax payer MLE is almost 15M nowadays

This is a full MLE deal with a small bump

ur just used to figures from the past

any team in the league would give Jovic an MLE deal..yes, he hasn't been durable and that's an issue but he's a 6'10 versatile forward, that can spread the floor and has two-way upside whose only 22, came into the league as a teenage foreigner with a very slender physique so i wouldn't put too much stock in his stats or avgs. the tools and skillset are there, he's just not put it all together yet

It's tough and it takes time, to get acclimated to a whole new culture, language and the transition into the NBA game (and rules), all while being a teenager

he's worth the MLE any day of the week and twice on Sunday, it was easy to see in Eurobasket that both his body, game and mindset are trending upwards and he's really starting to come into his own

Yeah, he'll likely never be a star even tho that's not a forgone conclusion at all but 16M per isn't star money..

Will Christian Brown become a star? How much should CB command in the open market?

Jovic has all the tools to become a really good role player, his floor is like a 5th starter on a decent team so 16M per is a good deal for both sides

Yup. Who were they bidding against?

Chi and Mia fixing to be play-in competitors for a long time….

He's shown a lot more than Patrick Williams.

Patrick Williams is a top 10 bad contract in the league. The Jovic deal is poor and unnecessary but not on that level, fortunately for Miami. Giving out 4 years MLE-level deals for 8th men who can’t stay healthy is how you keep living in the play-in zone though.

I don't hate this deal. It's a gamble, but there is some upside. Jovic is 6'10" and only 22 years old. He has shown flashes, $15M per year is not that much in today's NBA.

So does this mean he'll stop being a Euro scrub now? Obviously still very young (shown on his inconsistencies and lack of confidence) but i guess by paying him he's forced to actually play like an actual NBA player now. LOL
