Most people wouldnt know as he is strictly local tv, but James Worthy is IMO an elite analyst. Breaks down plays and tendencies simply and brilliantly but youd only see him in local LA broadcasts. Nationally I like JVG and the TNT crew.

Stephen A is the man. Love listening to his radio show.

So what if he screams and isn't really knowledgeable. It's entertaining!

Says the Knicks fan... Sort of like your team, right? Who cares if they don't win games or play the game very well... It's entertaining!

the tnt crew is too funny

Anyone remember last season when Gregg Anthony gave his playoff predictions halfway through the year... his list did not include Utah. The whole set laughed at him. Someone asked him... Uh, what about Utah? He said "They are not in."

Gregg Anthony is near the bottom of my list. Jeff Van Gundy is the funniest announcer and most entertaining to listen to. His insights are unlike other former-coach-announcers in that he is not afraid to tell the truth. Hubie Brown sugar coats a lot of stuff and sounds like he is afraid to hurt people's feelings. JVG is very smart and likable behind a mic. I wish they would cut that team down to two -- so he doesn't get overshadowed by Mark Jackson... that guy stinks too.

Clyde is greatness. He is unbiased, and even though he doesn't know what the words he is saying mean, he is still great.

Steven A Smith:

"RAAAASHO NESTEROVIC IS TERRIBLE"

"ISIAH HAS ACQUIRED TALENT, YOU CANT ARGUE THAT"

"OKUR IS TERRIBLE"

"HOWEVA"

"YAO IS TERRIBLE"

"THE NUGGETS ARE GOING TO THE FINALS THIS YEAR"

"EVERY WHITE/FOREIGN BORN PLAYER IS TERRIBLE"

etc

Charles is entertaining (and pretty knowledgable), SAS is a howler monkey. I compare the two because it's clear SAS wants to be the Charles Barkley of ESPN.

In the written media: Charley Rosen

On television: Jeff Van Gundy

Edit:

Oh, and little to do with the question, but my favourite radio play-by-play guy is the Bucks' Ted Davis.

Doug Collins is a good commentator. Always has a complete thought, doesn't get flustered and gets his point across concise and clear. But in terms of X's and O's, JVG is the best by far. He'll tell you what play the team will most likely run before they do it on the in bounds. Hubbie knows what he's talking about but he speaks too slow and is bordering senility with his rants.

But yes, the TNT crew is the best commentators by far of all of sports. Because they make you feel like you're watching the games at home with your friends over beer. The TNT crew (especially Charles) aren't afraid to make fun of each other or of the players they are watching. That makes for good basketball! I remember when Charles would consistently make fun of how big Jason Kidd's son's head was. He would go on and on. And it was hillarious. Kenny and them were laughing and told him to stop, and Charles said, "Come on! I ain't lying. Jason knows his son gots a big head!" It's awesome.

But call me old school or a bit of a homer, but I still think the best sports commentator of all time is the great Chick Hearn. He revolutionized the play-by-play game calling in the NBA.

JVG rules. It's not even close. Everyone else has their strengths -- funny, entertaining, knowledgeable, insightful, etc. JVG is just the complete package, and you really can't say that about anyone else on TV. He gets extra awesome points his candor and decided lack of diplomacy.

Hubie's by far my favorite in-game guy. Doug Collins is another guy I like. I thought Steve Kerr was good as well.

As far as the studio crew goes, even if I don't care about the game I'll put on TNT to watch the halftime show. They're not only knowledgable but they're also a blast to watch because they're so funny.

I'm going against the grain here and saying that I can't stand Jeff Van Gundy. While he knows a lot, he still takes it all too personally and gets too emotional about what he's talking about. Plus, the random trying-to-be-funny comments like

"YOU KNOW WHAT'RE OVERPRICED??? IPODS!"
*crickets*

He comes up with gems like that once in a while.

Jeff van gundy is hilarious. Doug collins and hubie are great too. all former coaches are pretty good analysts since they know whats going on and give u a coaches perspective.

Greg anthony and legler are the best former nba player analysts...they know whats up, cept legler is a warrior hater.

Worst former nba analysts: Jamal Mashburn, Marc Jackson, jon Barry, Reggie miller, tim hardaway was bad, scottie pippen was horrible, magic johnson isnt good.
