Not really. He plays short because he learned to play short and because he's skinny as hell.

His wingspan is a solid 7' 3" which is all the more impressive since it's basically all arms.

Having a huge wing span means you getting drafted too early a lot of the time.

See Muhamed Saer Sene. He is like 7-0 with a 7-11 wing span or something.

Saer Sene was 6'11" and had the largest wingspan ever recorded in the NBA.

It was 7' 6.75"

I tried to find the picture but couldn't. There use to be a picture on the net of Sene touching the rim on his tip toes.

The dudes arms were so long he could practically tie his shoes without bending over.

astrallite wrote:With bigs the focus is more on standing a reach. A guy like Bosh plays like a guy shorter because he's got such a long neck. A guy like Dwight Howard may only be about 6-10 but his shoulders are as high as Bynum's and higher than Pau Gasol's, both guys who are about 3 inches taller than him. As a result his standing reach is around 9'4, which is right there with most 7'+ centers. Shawn Marion is another example. He's only about 6'5 but his shoulders are ridiculously high.

When Howard and Bynum were standing together it didnt look like Howard's shoulders were higher than Bynums. If you think about it, Howard's shoulders being higher up than Bynum's doesn't make sense. Either Bynum's head would have to be really big, or Howard's head would have to be really small, and to me their heads look to be about the same size. A more likely explanation for Howard's large wingspan is that his chest is very wide and he does have long arms.

Fun fact: JJ Redick can't comb his hair without tilting his head to one side.

Average measurements by height:
http://www.draftexpress.com/nba-pre-dra ... s&year=All

(gotta look at the sample sizes though, don't trust anything with a small sample size)

So "he's only 6'8 but has a wingspan of a 7 footer" probably means he's 6'7" barefoot (6'8" in shoes), but instead of having the wingspan of someone who's 6'7" barefoot, roughly a 7' wingspan, he has the wingspan of someone who's 6'11" barefoot (7' in shoes), roughly a 7'3" wingspan.

Length is one of the biggest indicators of a players size than anything. It has been said that all great NBA players have one attribute in common. Which is length. The only great players without great length were perimeter oriented guards or swing players.

Wingspan though is perhaps overrated. Standing reach is a much better indicator. You can have short arms and still have a good standing reach because your chest size is incorporated in the measurement.

Standing reach is what you really see with your eyes. Since you don't play basketball with your head it is really not important. Blake Griffin has legit PF height. Maybe even center height. He is very undersized though because of his very short arms. There are guards with comparable standing reach. My feeling on Blake is he be a good player but will not match most of the expectations for him.

Jeff Green is another guy that is hampered with short arms. People always say he is undersized to play PF. In reality he has very close to legit PF height. Why do people think he is undersized though? Well he is very short in length. Despite legit PF height he has the arms of a guard. Which pretty much means at PF he is useless on defense. As big men shoot over the top with ease. He has almost no NBA post game against PFs.

Now having great length isn't a guarantee that you will be great. Having short arms is pretty much a guarantee that you won't be great though. Especially those that play on the front court at the basket.

Great article some years back written on the importance of standing reach and how we should measure height.

Just by going over a lot of the combine results. It appears that black people on average have longer arms than white guys. In fact by looking at measurements you can almost pick the white guys out just by looking at their height to wingspan ratio.

I concur. Not surprising the league is mostly black.

American Caucasians seem to have short limbs but you find that in Europe that limbs are longer. Especially in Eastern Europe.
