How do you know Kobe demanded this contract and the Lakers weren't the ones who offered it first?

Kobe made it known he was not taking a big paycut this summer.

The Lakers have consistently made decisions that are best for Kobe but not always best for themselves. There is not an organization in sports that says lets take our aging superstar coming off a career killing injury and make him the highest paid player in the sport.

Lets look what just happened here. A player coming off a major injury at 36 who has not played this year. Who was still signed for this year. Giving the Lakers complete flexibility to wait and see how Kobe came back. Then next summer structure a deal around what they could or couldn't do in free agency. Pretty much said screw that flexibility stuff. Screw waiting to see how he came back after this injury. Lets just give Kobe another big deal. Almost as if they were afraid he was about to bolt. It makes zero sense for the franchise. It only benefits Kobe and people that like Kobe more than the Lakers.

Kobe is an all-time great, but he has absolultely ZERO righ to complain about bad teammates after this deal...
How in the heck do you build a team when guy is making 25 million, and he is going to be 36?

In what world is a 36 year ol dplayer worth over 20 million..smh Lakers management

That said, Kobe should retire a Laker, and he has been a big part of their success.

I understand your point completely; however in fairness to LAL they do see him every day. This wasn't blind trust, I'm sure all aspects were considered and the medical staff consulted.

Come on now. Kobe DID take a paycut. Very generous of him.

I actually agree with everything you said

What's with all this Legacy crap? who cares? I'm a fan of the team, not the player. MJ played the twilight of his career with the Wiz. You think Bulls fans disowned him? Many still consider him the GOAT. You think Colts fans disowned Peyton now? Did the 9ers disown Montana?

The only people defending this contract are Kobe Stans who lived the majority of their life with Kobe on this team.

If that was the case the Bulls should still be giving MJ a check. If your going to pay Kobe to be the best player in the league then he has to be the best player in the league.

Just one more reason why Dwight made the right decision to bolt LA. The Lakers have tied themselves to Kobe more than any time in there history to one player. Don't want to sound like Nelly but he is the Lakers spoiled child and they continue to cater to whatever he demands. I heard the talk that Kobe would take a Duncan like deal. KG like deal. I had a feeling though Kobe would do what Kobe does. Send a message in his weird strange way. This message is that you guys have Lebron, Dwight, Durant, Harden, Paul ahead of Kobe on the top player list. I"m at the top of the highest paid list. IMO the Lakers have just signed up for bad to mediocre win loss records and the only reason to watch Laker games for the next 3 years will be see if Kobe can chuck up enough shots to catch Jabbar.

You have to consider the taxes though which are very high in cali

Unfortunately the NBA Cap does not consider taxes. Perhaps the cap should consider take home pay and not actually the full contract. I can understand why Kobe wants the cash. If your a Laker fan your screwed. If your a Kobe fan you love it. If your Pau Gasol your scratching your head. Unless they can do something with Steve Nash the Lakers don't seem like an option for him anymore. If Kobe had gotten like 15 million a year you probably could have taken a contract around 10 and they still could have went after a max player. Now your only chance of being a Laker is if they can't get anyone else.

I love Kobe but this is terrible news for Lakers fans.

Definitely have to lose some respect for the guy after this. For someone supposedly obsessed with winning he sure has made some anti-championship, pro-legacy moves (04 Finals, Game 7 against Boston, now this.)

Honestly this is BS. Maybe Mitch has something else in the works, but this certainly looks like a bad move for the team.
Lakers fan since 99.

Because he 's a Lakers legend and they want him to retire a Laker. He helped bring 7 chips to the Lakers. How many teams even have 1 championship in 17 years?

He deserves to retire a Laker.

What I find funny is that in the next few pages nobody corrects your error. Kobe only has 5 "chips", not 7. And he was Robin to Shaq being Batman on 3 of those "chips" as you call them.

This year + the 2 years extension = 3 years

I guess they will still be a playoff team so no top10 1st round pick

So yeah you have at least 2 years of rebuilding to say the least

You can laugh as much as you want but the Clippers will own the place, lucky you they wont have any title except the Divsion banner to hang

Can someone please explain to me how the Lakers are even allowed to pay him that much???????\

I thought after the new CBA you can't pay a guy 25 million a year? Isn't that why all the max contracts now are all in the 16-18 million range per season?!

Another 2 years of irrelevancy guaranteed for the Lakers franchise,

there is no way you compete with a 36 and 27 year old kobe taking a 24 million dollar cap hit lmao

ya, all players after they have reached 100 mil in their career should be restricted only to vet min and disobey all economic principle. After all, they are set for life and additional incomes are just pure greed, right?

I did not suggest he take the veteran minimum. However, why could he not have taken 10 million a season or so? Seriously, he has made over 280 million over his career just from contracts. There is no reason for him to be making 50 million over the next two years. Logically, he does not care about winning anymore, as how are the Lakers supposed to compete with him eating almost half of their cap space? That is what I am saying. Logically, he cannot care about winning at this stage, or he would have taken less so that the Lakers could build a better team.
