He’s a very small scoring PG who just broke his shooting hand swiping for a ball. His 3pt shooting took a slump and he had difficulty at times in the post season and started forcing shots for minutes at a time and shot the Knicks out of winnable games.

Smart for him to take the guaranteed money since it gives him security and also helps the team. Everyone wins.

Wow getting big head brunson on a non super max is huge for them. Considering how many max and max potential players are on that roster now, that difference could make for another roster move/addition next year. As others are saying though, he'll get his money on the option in a few years.

People need to stop projecting their values/sensibilities onto Brunson. You consider it crazy but he clearly doesn't look at it that way.

Why are you getting so triggered over this? The poster made a fair statement. Most people - whether that's NBA or everyday folks - will take the most money with everything else being equal or close to it.

What OG does is entirely relevant in this conversation. He's his teammate, who also just signed a deal in the last few months, who didn't take this paycut and isn't nearly as good (or as healthy) as Brunson. It's not necessarily a condemnation of OG, but it's 1000% a relevant talking point.

Just has to do with their circumstances. OG was a free agent who had other lucrative offers on the table. Same with iHart. Both took the most money from their highest bidder. Brunson made it clear he wants to stay here, he wants to compete and felt this is how he could do it.

Randle did the same as Brunson when he signed his extension instead of waiting a year for a bigger payday. Mikal is already being reported to take a pay cut. Hart/DDV/Mitch/McBride are all on very solid deals as well.

And all of that is very fair and great for Knick fans.

The owners arent innocent, they pushed for this new barganing agreement with the aprons and thus leading to tougher decisions to be made when paying players

They can afford any kinda contracts necessary, they just dont want to

Dont push it on the players to be "team players" when it comes to this

Brunson honestly is setting a bad precedent. It's one thing to take a 5-10 mil paycut for the same amount of years. But cutting out 113 million and 1 more yr on a contract is bad business, no other way to split it for a player who is fringe top 10 in the NBA

People talk alot about how certain players shouldnt be maxed out, well Brunson is unquestionably a max player

I'm seriously wondering about this too without trying to be cynical.

A couple of thoughts I have is that my home team (Raptors) gave out contracts that were not deserved. If you are going to get the max, you should prove you already have the potential to be a number 1 or 2 guy on a contender or else you should not be paid the max.

If you do fit this criteria (like Brunson), why should he take a paycut so the owner saves money?

I truly hope there are backdoor deals that will make Brunson whole otherwise it feels like a lot of fans are sympathizing with the owners whose job it is as billionaires is to cut the checks to put out the best team possible.

Didn't Donovan Mitchell just do the exact same thing? I don't see what the big deal is --it's smart. Helps his team with flexibility for a few years while their Championship window is open, makes sure he gets paid now in case of injury, and sets him up to sign a potential supermax with new TV money.
