I don't think that these are comparable situations.
Parsons was a Restricted Free Agent. He was pretty much told by Houston to go find a deal. The thinking was that Houston would match it.
Dallas - for whatever reason - locked in on Parsons. They committed to him early while Houston was playing a bigger game. Parsons would have been an absolute fool to turn down that offer that Cuban gave him. He got his money, he got a bigger role. I personally wish that he wouldn't have attacked the city that had been supporting him; but that is water under the bridge at this point.
DJ is an unrestricted free agent who verbally committed to the Mavericks. That team since went about their offseason thinking that this was their framework, only to have this player back out at what is almost literally the 11th Hour.
Yeah, it was a "verbal" agreement; but the way that the NBA offseason is set up a player's word is essentially bond. DJ - while technically doing nothing wrong - kind of broke that bond.
Parsons did what was best for him, and it was unfortunate that the timing didn't work in the Rockets favor. That said, I consider that pretty shrewd by the Mavs. They got their guy. They paid the price they knew the Rockets wouldn't match to do it. Parsons didn't back out after Dallas offered him the deal.
