I'm starting to get a little worried about the lack of action here in Australia. We've gone into Phase 1 of lockdowns (pubs, clubs, restaurants, cafe's, gyms's) but I live in the inner city and still see plenty of people out and about.

The other thing I'm worried about is my partner works at the hospital as a Physiotherapist and she has said they really haven't done much prep for this. They're still telling older patients to come in for non essential treatment. She works in Out Patients, mainly treating hip and knee replacements. She is still teaching GROUP classes! She has voiced her concerns to the bosses but it looks like they're trying to get as much money prior to the government shutting down the non essentials. For a hospital to be that reckless absolutely blows my mind. Putting the lives of patients and workers at risk for money is exactly what's wrong with this world.

He said, in weeks not months. Then he talked about the number of people dying from the flu and car accidents and we don't stop everything for them.

Its like watching and listening to a homeless drunk after his favorite sleeping bag was stolen by his nemesis across the street.

Some data and info from the task force briefing press conference today. The total tests done and amount done yesterday are extrapolated from what Birx said today and a graph Giroir used two days ago.

Tests processed yesterday = approximately 61,000
Total USA tests done and processed = approximately 315,000
(USA now #3 in the world in tests done behind South Korea (338,000) and China (325,000+)

China has almost certainly done far more tests than that (data from end of February), but we don't know their data because they have not put it out, I don't think.

Italy is at about 278,000 tests done, I believe.

Given current trajectories, USA should lead the world in announced CVirus tests done by the end of tomorrow. But we're still a long ways from where things need to be, and behind the leaders in tests done per capita.

- Rate of virus attack in NYC metro area is like 1/1000 (Birx said). Far higher than rest of the nation
- NYC metro area has like a 28% positive rest rate. Rest of nation has like a 8% positive test rate
- Absolutely critical for NYC metro area people to socially distance and self isolate now to stop virus there

Also from press conference.

Birx: Self-swab test is coming this week (not sure how fast it will be distributed; still watching press conference)

I think they are being far too cavalier with their statements about NYC being so much worse.

The truth is we just don't know because nowhere else has testing anything close to NY.

NYC subways can't be underestimated here. It's not just people living close together.

It's how so many get to work. Keeps the city running. But much of the NYC workforce is locked in a room with random strangers twice per day, some for hours every day.

True social distancing in NYC will require shutting down the subways, and whole lot more people not going to work that are currently still going to work. And will continue going to work until they truly shut it down. People that have no choice but to work.

"Essential services" are often the worst paid. So if you shut down those trains, the richest residents of Manhattan (real estate/ income wise), will see some chaos with locally understaffed grocery stores and take out spots, and difficulty acquiring their own food.

This is the bridge no politician will have the guts to cross right now in NYC. Inconveniencing the money. Everybody else is already inconvenienced, and if they're still taking subways to work, marching themselves into almost certain illness or worse every day that the subways remain open.

The increase in testing was and is a big help to aid fighting these circumstances, and still more is needed continuously, especially if change on the subway front seems so unlikely.

Point is I don't expect rates of infection to fall the way they have the potential to in most other cities because of the NYC subways.

The increased testing for a while will see some rates fall sooner than other cities, awareness helps. But it's hard to see them ever falling to lower rates than most other cities long term imo, with the subways still running.

Those trains never stop.

The tweets and tweeters themselves probably come too close to breaking political rules here, but more generally, I *want* to say I'm surprised at how much I'm seeing the "are the deaths of a couple mil old weak REALLY worth destroying the whole economy makes u think" galaxy brained takes, but truthfully, I guess I'm not surprised.

I suppose I just expected them to hold out a little longer for show.

I am curious how Japan's numbers will be over the next few weeks considering Olympics are basically out of the picture now.

Anecdotal (which I've avoided in this thread since there's no way to verify it but whatever) so take it with however much salt you need, but I chatted with some old coworkers from my time in China, and though they're not from Hubei but Guangzhou, they are basically implying that they don't believe for one second the official numbers coming out of China. This jives with the RTHK (a Hong Kong news agency) article I posted recently showing how it's nearly impossible to even get tested in Wuhan at the moment: https://news.rthk.hk/rthk/en/component/k2/1516240-20200323.htm?spTabChangeable=0

Looks like Italy is declining in new cases and growing more in "recovered".

USA only has 178 recovered

7432 VS 178 is a huge difference

Who else doesn't expect this virus to wash through the Senate in the next few weeks?

Rand Paul will be the Senate's Rudy Gobert.

This is my guess from following Florida politics, our politicians do anything for big business. Big business wants something they get it, no questions asked. They want a law removed or added, it's done. They want tax cuts, despite the fact that Florida has very low corporate taxes they get it. The mantra is Florida is open for business.

Apologize if this has already been posted. I imagine its stuff like this (not just in Florida but anywhere with slow response):

Bless that commissioner for standing up for everyday Floridians. We need more politicians like him.
