Watching Chet play again tonight and his efficiency is just nuts, lol. Very impressive player. Regardless of however you feel about either Paolo or Chet, I bet Magic and Thunder fans are just happy neither one of them drafted Jabari Smith. I like Jabari, but he would have been a colossal mistake over either of them in retrospect. I think he will be a good role player for years to come, but he’s no star. Chet is the deadeye shooter he was suppose to be, while also being a defensive stalwart and superior passer.

Re: Safe to say, Chet "Hologram" Holgrem > Paolo Banchero
Yeah, I’ll go with what seems like the safe play here…
Holmgren has the unique game, potential #2 offensive guy on a good team that can rim protect plus handle and pass at least a little. He has the higher ceiling and could certainly end up with the better career, but…
Paolo also has a somewhat unique game, can do a bit more of everything but protect the rim and shoot threes well, and doesn’t come with the clearly high injury risk of Chet.
I’d still take Paolo, unless I already had a team ready to compete for a title. I don’t think the Thunder are that yet, but they’re close enough that I can see preferring Chet. In a vacuum, ignoring all other variables, I’d go Banchero. Maybe that makes me too risk-averse to ever get a ring. It’s a reasonable counterpoint.

Really good nuanced take

Good thing both organizations "missed" on Jabari. Like you said good role player but not a star.

Good thing the game winners that Paolo had, we didn't need a 3 then. Also, we had more time on the clock for more options than a catch and shoot.
Okay so let me know when he does that, or makes even close to the defensive impact Chet does in any game.
Paolo is not the defender that Chet is but he has still been pretty good on that end.

Chet is better than advertised for sure. But Paolo is very good also both are going to be very good.

Paolo is going to be a superstar. With his improved defense and great offensive game he is just going to be a star. Both teams won here.

Why are some people acting like Paolo can't shoot? He's shooting it essentially 40% from 3 this year and has been since around February of last year.

Where are you getting that?
https://www.nba.com/stats/teams/defense
It was mentioned a few times elsewhere, maybe there was an advanced defensive metric that supported that or it was based on adjusted pace. Either way, they’ve still been an elite defensive team. Paolo’s defense gets way too much flack when he’s actually above average on that side of the ball. Classic case of people just reading the college scouting report instead of watching games.
Honestly I haven’t had the opportunity to catch Banchero too much this year. I’m sure a few games are coming up with my teams. Are you saying you think he is a significant reason they have such a good defense? Whenever I saw him I thought he was okay but not that interested in that end. The potential is there, maybe he’s finding himself on that end this year?

Re: Safe to say, Chet "Hologram" Holgrem > Paolo Banchero
Let's go Paolo!
Made light work of the Raptors frontcourt, he's too physical and physically developed already on that end since his rookie yr.
Nah I can't cosign that just yet. Jabari is literally playing with a guy in Alperen Sengun who is on a different level himself not to mention all of the other offensive guys they have in HOU.
If he had more of an offensive responsibility on that team there's no question on my mind he's got the tools and tenacity to compete with those guys. He can score at all three levels and plays tough defense for his slender body type.

I think Chet could be all NBA one day but the FACT of the matter is, you can't scale his game and playstyle to a #1 option on a title team, you just can't. Maybe that doesn't matter for the Thunder with SGA and the other young talent they have as they don't need Chet to be that.
Banchero on the other hand plays exactly the style that is needed to scale to a #1

He’s played like 11 games in the NBA though. You can’t really set a cap on him. He could just keep getting better the way Jokic did and eventually you run your whole offense through him. I don’t see any limitations. It’s just with Banchero it’s easy to see the archetype, a poor man’s Lebron.

Banchero is my guy man. He's the guy I wanted the Rockets to draft. I was dead sure he would fall to us too as all the mock drafts leading up to it had Banchero going 3rd. Obviously I'm pretty happy with Jabari too but man I wished Orlando had taken him so we could have Banchero.

it's the internet way - you set the narrative that will win you the argument while ignoring relevant components. jokic is a great example. his first couple seasons in the league it was clear he was really good - great rebounder, great passer, 16-18 ppg guy. if you would have asked anybody at that point he were a #1 option type guy they would have said no. but he was 21-22 years old. stupid to put a cap on any 21 year old, let alone one who has played 15 NBA games.

Paolo is the #1 option on a Magic team that is currently 9-5 and could easily be even better without some late blown leads. He has been significantly better this season, even if the numbers don’t bare it out looking blindly at them. He’s shooting much more efficiently overall and is currently over 40% from 3. He’s also been much improved defensively, and you can see it when the Magic play - their defense has been elite and he’s been a big part of it. I think a lot of people just ran with the pre-draft scouting report and assumed he wouldn’t be able to defend in the NBA. Guy is huge with tree trunk legs, a lot of people are going to have trouble scoring on him in the post.

I think both are better than I expected personally, and I really wish we could appreciate both, without the constant need to compare them
Just 8* years ago Andrea Bargnani was my franchise player, you MF'ers can't rain on my parade

Agreed. As a magic fan, I love tuning into OKC games to see Chet. He is an amazing talent and you have to love the fire he plays with. Paolo was already pretty good last year but taking it up a level this year. It’s awesome to see young talented players grow and, hopefully, turn into stars.

For real, I think most magic fans like Chet because we thought for a bit we might draft him as well so we did our research on him. I don’t think anyone is doubting his skills, just his ability to hold up a long career.

Love Chet's game, but he's going to have to play a couple full seasons before he shakes all the health concerns. 82 is a grind and he still looks like someone is going to snap him in half any minute.

i’m not, magic haven’t had a go to scorer since what maybe TMac?!Johnny Tomala wrote:Chanel Bomber wrote:Chet has a higher ceiling but is more of an injury risk. Paolo is a more conventional talent.
I was on the fence around draft time but ultimately felt Paolo should be the #1 pick.
Based on the little we know today, I'd change my pick and select Chet. I do regret not taking the "risk" of going with the more unconventional talent.
Yup, I was surprised Magic didn't pick Holmgren.
