I don't like that he implied that Americans wanted Dirk to win because he's white.

people were rooting for any of 29 teams not named Miami Heat, it didn't matter of it was Dallas, Golden State, Sacto or OKC, I would root for Shanqghai Sharks if they ever played the Heat..

Multiculturalism without assimilation sucks, who would want that? I mean i wouldn't like huge population of Germans to move into my town and don't even bother to learn my language while establishing their own school and churches. Not longing for leaving in multicultural society =/= racism.

Actually, assimilation is not what you should strive for regarding multicultiralism. Assimilation basically means that you should reject your cultural background and take on this other culture. This is where most countries go wrong and try to make them to "us" and view them for what they aren't (us) instead of who they are. But you obviously don't know what you're talking about so....

You don't try to make other people like you to get a functioning multicultural society, you accept them for what they are and advocate a mixture, not assimilation.

Yes you are right about it. What I meant by assimilation is like when one guy from Peru comes to Slovakia he makes friends with Slovakians and there are not many of his countrymen there. When people migrate in large numbers they tend to stick together more. I don't know why but for some reason it always spawns loads of problems, especially if these people are very different ethnically.

Yeah, I understand what you mean. Your first example is how it should be, a mixture. The thing is that it's not their fault, it's the peoples fault for trying to assimilate immigrants instead of embracing them for what they are and include them. This then leads to segregation and therefore, the immigrants are not to be blamed for these problems, it's the people living in the country and the system that's at fault most of the time.

I think it's more a culture thing then anything else. Think Hasselhoff versuz Eminem. The writer would suggest that people wouldn't let Eminem in their homes as well. It's not like Germany only has white skinned athletes.

Choice of words hasn't been thought of very long though...or the writer just hates America.

It's just difficult to talk about a society that isn't yours, you easily end up saying very stupid and ill-informed stuff, like this article shows.

For example, this thread has people talking about the recent riots in France as "ethnic" riots, and related to immigration. These riots were NOT ethnic, they were coming from populations of specific neighborhoods of suburban cities, and no neighborhood in France is filled with only one ethnicity (in more simple terms, there were many white people in those riots). It can also not be said that they were related to immigration, since 100% of the rioters were french, born and raised. Immigrants in France never riot, they're very very quiet and often scared. The riots were related to social issues, exclusion and so on.

I think this german author should have learned to shut up instead of talking about stuff he knows nothing about. He probably wouldn't appreciate it if an american author would claim to be able to describe German society to him.
That being said, I agree with the premise that clearly triggered the article : this final can be viewed as a victory of team basketball over individualities.
