Ha ha, that's one approach I guess. :-?

Montenegro beats Serbia by 7. Poland beats Slovenia by 10. Bosnia almost eliminates Lithuania. Finland beats Greece by 9.

What the hell is going on this tournament? The parity between teams is ridiculous and some rosters are all Euroleauge + NBA caliber.

I really like Mirza and i agree that the Nets isn't the right place for him.
Seeing the PF situation in Rockets he would be an ideal player playing next to Dwight, and also the Rockets wouldn't have to trade one of Asik or Lin because he hasn't have big trade value at the moment.

As for Greece, the lack of good defenders at 1vs1 and the lack of a rim protector has cost us the last two matches. Offensively we are good, but that doesn't seem enough to win games. Now with 0-2, i don't know if we can make it in the final 8. We need at least 2 wins (and maybe that's not enough) in the next 3 matches against Spain, Slovenia and Croatia. Spain is always giving us hard times, and there is a long time since our last win. Also Gasol vs Mayrokefalidis is going to be really bad for us. We 'll see though, but for now I 'm not optimistic.

Like I said 2 pages back. No superstars (save for Parker, Gasol and maybe few more, but no Pau, Gallinari, Teodošić, Kirilenko, Dirk, ...) Teams with these superstars would beat the crap out of lesser teams like Montenegro, Ukraine, ... But instead we get these superb awesome and lots of nail biting games!

I agree but he wasn't given a good chance last season under Dumb and Dumber. He should see 15-20 minutes a night to be effective.

I think its part of it but I feel like the lower tier teams also improved a lot. Out of those players I think only Pau would dominate, and possibly Teodosic.... Dirk and Kirilenko are a shell of their former selves, and Gallinari would be equivalent to Bellinelli/Teletovic.

The top Euroleague players in 2012-2013 were Spanoulis, Diamantidis, Rudy Fernandez, Krstic, Ante Tomic, Teodosic, Navarro, Khryapa, and Mirotic. Half of these guys are in the tournament but with the exception of Diamantidis and Teodosic I doubt the others would add value to their teams to make them dominate as the case is historically. I feel like basketball is catching up in the fringe countries. Solid call by Fiba to allow 24 teams now that you have Finland beating Greece, Poland beating Slovenia, Bosnia beating Lithuania, Germany beating France and so forth.

the outcome of these two games had no effect on the next round, so competitivness wasnt there and players were just trying to avoid an injury

Alright thanks... didn't know that the +/- mattered for only the relevant countries, and not those in the group as a whole.

Too bad a fringe team like say Georgia wasn't able to get everybody to play this time. With Shengelia, Pachulia and Pullen who knows, maybe they could qualify for the Worlds. Instead they lose close games to Slovenia and Croatia, and it's all down hill after that, and an early exit.

Ferrandiz also forced a rule change when he ordered Lorenzo Alocen to score in his own basket so that an injury and foul-plagued Real Madrid would avoid overtime in the two-way 1962 Euroleague eighth-finals.

So no, it's not legal.
If you want to try to measure the elements of basketball that are supposedly unmeasurable, spend a game just watching Marc Gasol.

Head to head match-ups come first when it's a tie between two teams. But when more than two teams are involved in the tie then point differential matters. In this case, it was a 4-way tie.

+1, You beat me to post the story of when Ferrandiz forced a rule change.

Group F with Italy, Spain, Slovenia, Greece, Croatia and Finland is going to be interesting. Italy "just" needs to beat one out of Spain, Slovenia and Croatia, but they could advance even if they lost all 3 games. And unfortunately for Greece, they need to win their 3 games or wait for some miracle number combination. Can't wait for the Greece-Spain game on thursday, Spain will be trying to eliminate their biggest rival talent-wise, but Greece will try to survive, great great game.

Group E looks a bit more clear, with France, Lithuania, Serbia as favorites, and Ukraïne looking like the other team to advance. Belgium and Latvia have played really well, but they need to win almost every game in this stage.

So far, the 24 team formula has worked out well, there's more parity than expected, and it's great to watch Belgium or Finland advancing over historically better teams. What will be interesting is the wild card spots for next World Championship, given that Germany, Turkey and Russia have been eliminated.

So we lost 3 out of 5 games and still get to play the Second Round? Ok, I'll take it :D

Pretty sure we won't win a game in this round, those teams are a tad stronger than the teams we beat in the 1st round

Presumably overtime wins are counted as 1pt wins. Surely that's how it works on gambling as well.

Erden and Asik have been horrible, Valancunas and Matejunas started awful, had a decent game against latvia, since our bigs can't defend. Nikola Vucevic is averaging 6 points in 3 rebounds lol I could not believe it's the same guy from NBA.

The players you named are bigs. NBA guards (e.g. Dragic) seem to be doing well. But bigs not as much probably because of the following:

- Smaller court = less spacing on the floor so less good iso opportunities. The paint also tends to be more clogged.
- More rotations/player shuffling
- More intense/chaotic D
- Less star calls
- Less minutes in a game (40 to the NBA's 48)
- Game is more guard oriented so NBA's bigs have a harder time getting touches
- Faster pace is disadvantageous to C's and PFs

tell that to Kristic

In a Valanciunas - Eurobasket thread on the Raptors board I wrote how only Gasol and Krstic are standing out as Centers. I suppose you can also add Tomic to that list.

Valanciunas' 7 pts, 6 rbs 1 blks per game isn't too shabby considering he is playing only 19.4 minutes per game (basically had 2 games where he barely played).... and is 3rd overall in double-doubles (3).

Still its primarly a guard orientated game

head to head matters always even when there is a 4-way tie (therefore Serbs were first with 3:0 record against the other teams, regardless of the points) - only when ''head to head'' is tied (3 teams with 1-1 in their games) the points matter
