I like how people continually downplay or ignore Chet not being a #1 option and having the luxury of Shai being the focal point of opposing defenses when comparing him to other players...
Chet is great, but he's in a complementary role right now.

Chet is great, but he's in a complementary role right now.
#1 option implies you take the most shots, but Wagner is averaging about 2 more shots per game than Paolo. In terms of scoring, Paolo is averaging just 0.3 points more than Wagner.
So how is Paolo clearly the #1 and being "tripled team" like someone said above? And if he is being tripled team, then why isn't Wagner doing a lot better? I don't follow the team, so just asking.
And Chet is indeed in a complementary role, but Paolo would also be if SGA was his teammate. I have no skin in this battle but from the outside looking in, if I had to start a team today, I would choose Chet over Paolo without blinking. He has all-NBA potential on both sides of the court and he's holding his own vs. Wemby as well who's being billed with GOAT potential.

I think they'll both be 23+ ppg this season or next.timO wrote:banchero its not even a clear #1, Wagner is hand to hand with him.

That's true. Paolo just turned 21 last week, and SGA is 25. By the time Paolo is 25, he'll be a way better player than he is now.Tacoma wrote:Karate Diop wrote:I like how people continually downplay or ignore Chet not being a #1 option and having the luxury of Shai being the focal point of opposing defenses when comparing him to other players...

Paolo will probably end up a much better scorer just because he's able to create and draw fouls. Chet will probably be a 20 ppg player because he isn't the point of attack initiator.

He'll be way better than 1st team all-nba and top 5 MVP candidate?
Paolo might end up being a great player but people are seriously underrating SGA with this type of talk.

I do think SGA is becoming the most overrated player in the league, tho. He's a mediocre shooter that gets a lot of usage to put up stats, but hey, he has OKC as around the 10th best team in the league.

oh ok
SGA is averaging 30/6/6 with only 2 turnovers on 63TS% while the Thunder are 11-6. What exactly is overrated about him?

Re: Safe to say, Chet
I only stated that Banchero would improve by the time he was 25. Banchero is shooting around 45% from 3 and is in the top 20 already at 21.Jadoogar wrote:basketballRob wrote:I said Paolo would be way better than he is now when he's 25.Jadoogar wrote:

On SGA, yes, he has led OKC to the 10th best record, so he isn't terrible.

Paolo leads the team in touches, time per possession, scoring, and assists. I’d say that is a pretty clear #1 option for a team.

I would say it's safe to say Chet Holmgrem plus SGA is > Paolo and Wagner. At least right now.

Ignore the stuff about the triple teams, that’s just GB posturing. Paolo has had more room to work now that teams aren’t sagging off Fultz, who is out injured, but only certain teams elect to double him.
The reason he looks like the better number one option long-term on the team (leaving Chet aside) is the better free throw rate and midrange. He’s also looking to distribute more this season. Franz has been the more efficient player (aside from his World Cup hangover earlier this year) but he’s a finisher (often with an head start getting the ball on the move) and a secondary creator. He’s a prefect second option.
This is all basic stuff. It has nothing to do with who the better player is on the team. It doesn’t matter.

Wait what?
I would say that's a debate in and of itself and I don't think it's as "safe to say" as you say.
As a matter of fact even with the overlapping skillsets I believe Paolo Wagner is a better duo than SGA Chet as Paolo and Franz both can create their own offense better regardless of the defense or circumstances whereas Chet is more dependent on SGA in those same scenarios.
And don't quote post that Chet vid of him iso'ing in a one or two off game scenario cause most of his production is followups, alley oops, kick out 3's, and the rare 2-3 dribble iso drive.

Every time I want to come in here and compliment Paolo I read some truly dumb stuff that makes me think it's not worth engaging ITT.

It's not just posturing. There have been games where he literally does get triple teamed, especially when he's in the painted area. Not every team. But it's happened. He's been double teamed a lot as well. There are some teams that have the personnel to single cover him, but he has definitely been triple teamed at times. Especially last season. A tiny bit less so this season. Which is one of the reasons his FG% has been much better this season.
