I don't even think Duncan was the face of the NBA. Face of the NBA to me is as much a marketing term as it is a basketball term. To be face of the NBA you need to be among the best players and super marketable to casual fans.

Duncan was similar to Kareem. Both had many years as MVP caliber players but they were never really marketable to fans.

Duncan was in no way the face.

My personal impression during my time following the NBA

Jordan ==> Shaq ==> Shaq/Kobe ==> Kobe ==> Lebron ==> Lebron/Curry ==> TBD
