When you look at Gradey's numbers between last year and this year, it's easy to see that Dick grew a lot.

Grant Hill is the best comp for me, though I know the handles and passing aren't close at this point. But the smart way he plays and gets in the right spot and always getting a good quick shot off.

What?

The handles aren't close, the passing isn't close, the north-south pressure isn't close, the athleticism isn't close...

The question isn't, "Is Dick any good?", but, "How good is Dick?"

My favourite player to watch on the team right now.

Outside of hitting his shots, he's making all the right passes. He's really unselfish and smart.

Dick finding role on rebuilding Raptors

Image

The Raptors are dealing with an early wave of injuries and have seen stars Scottie Barnes, Immanuel Quickley and RJ Barrett miss games, already vacating a ton of offensive opportunities in the interim. But that hasn't stopped Gradey Dick, who's averaging 21 points per game and has shown real flashes as a dynamic perimeter shooter in his second season.

His emergence as a contributor, despite a 2-6 start, is an important development for the Raptors, who are in the process of assembling winning parts for the future and need their draft picks to pan out. Dick, in particular, has the type of skillset that's critical to putting the right level of spacing around Barnes. He's a very good shooter on the move and has expanded his shot selection to include more above-the-break 3s, averaging six attempts per game with a 59.1 effective percentage, per Second Spectrum. His 37.3% mark from long range should feasibly improve over time and with more talent on the floor around him. Dick is establishing himself as someone defenses can't afford to leave open.

These early performances are of a bounce-back for Dick, who didn't light it up as a 20-year-old rookie nor shoot particularly well in 11 games in the G League last season. Given that shooting was viewed as Dick's best skill coming out of Kansas, his play raised some level of concern from observers around the league as to whether Toronto had overdrafted him with the No. 13 pick, with players like Keyonte George, Jaime Jaquez, Jr., and Brandin Podziemski coming off the board after him. Dick started to fare a bit better down the final stretch of last season, amid a lot of Raptors losing.

There's still a lot of room for improvement here, particularly on the defensive end, but his confidence and improvement have shown some early-season promise in Toronto.

Yup, his game mimics Rip's in a lot of ways but with 3P range. We'll see if he can get to the line as much as Rip did.

He's already exceeded my expectations. I was fairly low on him pre-draft but didn't think he'd fall to us at 13.

Rip had a 3 in Detroit. This is often forgotten, but he was a 35.4% shooter on 1.8 3PA/g for the Pistons. Which was pretty good for the time, especially given his dearth of 3pt shooting prior. He wasn't amazing, and Dick is better at the 3 than him, though.

Rip was also a .303 FTr guy for the Pistons. Dick, at the moment, posted .115 as a rook and is at .214 so far this season, both of which are WELL below league average. Hamilton had other things going for him.

But we'll see. Gradey has made large strides forward this year in a bunch of areas, so that's pretty fun to see. Going to be a good time watching how much further he can elevate.

Hands down my favourite raptor to watch this season. You can literally see how deflated the guys defending him are after he runs them through 3-4 screens, only to have the play end with a jumper in your grill.

Lowry had a bit of this off of DHO's where he'd pull in your grill fading to the left as the defender was stuck behind the player who just passed it off. It was a nice quirk to Lowry's game, but Gradey is just a shooter through and through, fading right, fading left, power dribbles off a DHO where he can only get the ball and then pulling a middie with no change in speed. Great movement shooter. I'm excited to see where this goes, I hope Darko features him in a prominent role even after Quickley and Barnes come back.
