The Spurs don’t even have a point guard to speak of.
Tre Jones is solid. Good utility PG. …
Take a look at that pbpstats link you posted, and check something. Choose Tre Jones, Sochan, and Wemby as the selected players. Then look at Tre Jones ON, with both Sochan and Wemby OFF. The DefRtg of that situation is 146.67.
Caution, incomplete data, small sample sizes, yada yada.
But that’s a hint of why the Spurs are trying the great Sochan Experiment. The Spurs defense was historically bad last season, and they would like to improve it. They do not see Jones as an answer.
Can't just discount Tre Jones because he isn't an all-star level lead guard, which he's not - but is productive and reliable on both ends.
“Both ends” you claim. Are you sure about that? He hustles and tries hard, granted.
Some people should pay attention more to the Spurs games before ruling out part of the roster.
Indeed, there are some people around who do need to pay more attention to the Spurs games. No doubt about it.
I guess Pop and the other Spurs coaches should have paid attention more to the Spurs games before they ruled out starting Jones at pg, eh? Naughty naughty on them.
In saying, a point guard to speak of, I mean one who is respectably good at both ends. Perhaps my standards are too high for the modern NBA.
My personal preference would be for Jones to start, since he does play better with Wemby, and for my viewing pleasure that’s what I care most about.
