Outside of 2020, the NBA got good ratings with LeBron in the finals. The issue isn’t LeBron, it’s we don’t have his replacement.

It's why the NBA relentlessly promoted Ant last year. They wanted/needed a new face for the league when he retires, and for whatever reason, guys like Jokic/Giannis/Tatum/Luka don't drive the same ratings

Jokic, Giannis, and Luka are foreign, and Jokic/Giannis are bigs.

The most popular players in the league have always been wings- Dr. J, Magic, Bird, Jordan, Iverson, Kobe, LeBron, and Curry.

Even Tatum plays a lot of power forward and is 6’10”.

The NBA is hoping that Ant or Ja reached superstardom.

Tatum is 6'8"

College basketball shoots more 3s than NBA.

Kentucky has the #1 offense and 42% of their shots are 3s. The #2 offense (Samford) shoots even more 3s.

52% of Illinois’ shots are 3.
53% of Louisville’s shots are 3s

Caitlin Clark shoots 9 threes per game and she just won athlete of the year.

Same with Euroleague, around 40% of their shots are 3s.

So how exactly do any of these leagues have “less chucking”. NBA players also make their shots at a way, way higher rate.

It proves that all the complaints about 3-pointers have always been fake. I think a lot of older fans want to hate today’s NBA but couldn’t find a legitimate reason so they had to settle on “too many 3s”.

College basketball shoots too many 3's also.

The problem is there is no variety in American basketball. In college the 3pt shot was an equalizer for the lesser talented teams/smaller colleges vs the universities that had all of the All-American/McDonalds team players:

- UNLV Running Rebels Larry Johnson/Stacy Augmon/Greg Anthony played a press defense that created their run and gun offense
- UCLA the UCLA full court 2-2-1 press under John Wooden
- Princeton ran the Princeton motion offense that would backcut you to death
- North Carolina four corner offense (this was boring but it helped the lesser talented teams)
- Arkansas 40 minutes of hell press defense
- Loyola Marymount under Paul Westhead ran a full court press, 10 seconds or less offense

Notice that a lot of those teams used defense to create offense. The problem with today's offense is not that they just shoot too many 3's, it seems like the defense lets them shoot too many 3's. No one pressures the ball coming up, we should just make it a 15 second shot clock.

There is too much offense and not enough defense and without the perception of any defense being played all that "skill" seems like it has not resistance. Its like playing a videogame on easy mode, there is no challenge and becomes boring.

Force offenses to work for more than 40-50 three-point shots a game and it might become interesting again. Lets seem some of this otherworldly athleticism around the paint and the rim, not 30ft away.....
I'm so tired of the typical......

I am old but this is an increasing issue for the NBA. It has always been true that a lot of NBA fans are fans because they love explosive, athletic highlights while not particularly enjoying full-length games just as there are boxing fans who love the sport for the KO but have no interest in 12 round fights.

It wasn't a big problem for the NBA previously because outside of watching games or SportsCenter there wasn't any way to access basketball highlights. Even in 2009, if you wanted to watch basketball highlights you were basically limited to what was on YouTube, which wasn't much. Now it is very easy to upload basketball highlights which fans share almost seconds after they happen. You can now get all the athletic highlights you want without having to watch the games.

I don't see anything the NBA can do to fix this problem

I know this isn't what you mean, but I don't see why the NBA has to constantly cater to 12 year olds.

The NFL, MLB, NHL has kept their fanbases for the most part. The NBA hasn't. And it's not like they didn't have a great start...most of us grew up on Bird, Magic, MJ, Shaq, Kobe, Lebron, etc.

There's a few reasons for this that are just building up. Load management, lack of small market exposure, lack of American stars. The biggest one I see this year is the explosion of threes. It's an issue. NBA basketball is so aesthetically different than what older fans are used to, it's turning us off.

Word of advice for NBA or any for profit organisations, stay out of politics.

Also, don't let your employees take over the organisation that limits and takes away your focus from your customers.

Just commons sense stuff

NBA is too predictable.

Not enough real rivalries or loyalty. Gave too much power to the players.

And they need to stay out of politics, it doesn’t mix well with sports and it’s usually just cringe.
——————-

But the real reason the NBA rating are down:

No one is allowed to play defense anymore, so theres not nearly as many close games.

Lebron left the Lakers, no one knows where he is, and it’s barely received any coverage. The NBA is barely relevant at the moment. If this were MJ in the 90’s it would be 24-7 speculation.

It is all over the news though. Where are you getting “barely any coverage” from?

Also, ESPN is hyping up Bronny’s 30 pt G-league game. Yes, a G-league game.

There haas been zero speculation on espn of what these personal reasons are. It’s bizarre. He just got up and left without notice? If this were Jordan the world would have stopped.

I think the difference is that other, younger video game fans have stepped into your place to support those industries.

But sports leagues are having a hard time getting casual young fans outside of the biggest sports cities to support the leagues at large.

NBA viewership down

Post#352 » by sikma42 » Sat Dec 14, 2024 5:05 pm

What are the storylines in the league surrounding great players?

Previously we storylines surrounding Bird/Magic/Jordan/Barkley/Kobe/Shaq/Lebron/KD

Now what is the story or reason to watch regular season games?

- who cares what Tatum does on this stacked team
- who cares what SGA does on this stacked team
- Jokic is stuck on a mediocre team with his only competition hurt (Embiid)
- Lamelo (one of the most popular players) is stuck in a wasteland

Wemby is basically one of the only reasons to watch NBA games.

It’s just a boring product right now. This isn’t even going into how players are actually playing on the court.

I can’t think of one game I’m looking forward to this year on the schedule. I can’t think of a time where that has been the case.

I will say I would like to watch the Knicks but I have league pass + YouTube tv + prime and many more. Too bad they are blocked out!

No league is perfect and every league can improve, but nothing goes up forever. Every product, league, industry has it's ups and downs. Certain ones will be up while others will be down. And then it will switch.

The NBA was down when Jordan retired and really struggled. They regained some of that viewership and now have lost some of it again. I don't really see why they should panic. They just signed a new rights deal that every sport other than the NFL would take in a heartbeat.

Cool story, the video games biz is growing 13% consistently year over year and has never dipped.

No it’s American ratings being used and the point would be better to use WW ratings. Also let’s face it a lot of white MAGA refuse to watch the NBA now because of the George Floyd protests. I know a number of these people personally.

I’m not saying this is a solution but I thought it was weird the NBA shut down because of George Floyd but was silent when it came to Roger Fortson.

I can't speak for the person you are responding too but I am an older fan who dislikes how much the modern game is oriented around 3 point shots. I still love the game or I wouldn't be here but it makes for a less enjoyable experience.

I'll make a baseball analogy, part of the reason I stopped following that game was it became overly focused on walks/homeruns/strikeouts to the exclusion of everything else. That is how I feel when some NBA games today. Every possession is oriented around that 3 point line.

I don't blame the players or teams for this. Shooting has improved enough that it is viable for teams to build their entire offense around it but I find it boring. Especially when it is a team like the Celtics that are built around above average to good 3 point shooters over a team like Warriors that were build around ATG shooters.

Again, I don't fault the teams/players for this but I think you're being unfair when you dismiss all of us who say we don't enjoy 3 point shots as oldheads.

Simplest fix is just moving the 3 point line back 10-11 inches.
