Simply the Magic were not letting an asset like Gortat go for nothing. I said it before. They can easily trade him later. They could easily trade him to a team under the cap regardless of his BYC later.

I thought that too but i think that the vince carter trade was something like that for some reason.

If they were willing to sign both Bass and Gortat why not just keep Hedo for that money?

Hedo isn't worth the money the Raptors paid him. I'd much rather have Gortat/Bass for that money.

Gortat may be bummed, but I"m the one who has to go back on to 2K, manage roster, assign BACK to the Magic ,switch rotations, then go back to DAL and up Dampier's again...ugh. The Mavs were one of my favorite teams for this 2 day stretch. Now I'll barely use them.

Check also question 85 because it's relevant for Gortat's case.

I'd consider bookmarking the Larry Coon's NBA Salary Cap FAQ page if I were you.

The main issue is that his salary is only worth half in a trade. Let just say that his contract was worth $6 the first year then in a trade his deal would only be worth $3. So it will be harder to get someone of value for him. On top of that he can be traded till Dec 15.

That's an understandable statement.
But, in that case we'd have absolutely zero big men beyond Dwight; literally none.

^^ yeah that's tough....looks like he will stay with orlando for at least 1 year then if he's traded...

What choice does he have?

Just stay in Poland; it's the best way to be sure that Orlando will work their tails off to find a feasible trade by December.

Next offseason he won't be. I think that is when Orlando will look to move him.

I agree.

Although Gortat could do some real harm to his trade value depending on how he plays/acts this year, I heard he's pretty upset that he wont get to start in Dallas now.

The Mavs and Gortat could still rescind the original offer and do a sign and trade from Orlando, but that probably won't happen. :(

even though gortat is BYC, it's easy to trade him because of the TPE.

Under Clause 85:
teams cannot trade players under the following circumstances:

For one year after exercising the right of first refusal to keep a restricted free agent (however, the player can consent to a trade to any team except the team that tried to sign him).

I just don't get why the Magic are willing to spend $35 million for a 10 minute a game back-up center but not $50 million for one of their star players that helped them reach the NBA Finals. I understand Hedo's overpaid, but if they plan to use Gortat as a back-up center he's probably going to be overpaid as well. A line-up of Nelson/Carter/Hedo/Shard/Dwight would pose match-up nightmares for just about every team in the league, and with that much talent they should be able to attract decent bigs that would sign for the veteran minimum.

I blame the luxury tax for everything.
