people reference 72-10 all the time. but the more impressive record is 87-13, which was the combined regular season and playoff record
the bulls also had a point differential of 10.6 in the playoffs after 12.3 in regular season. the heat are, by comparison, +7.5 this season
the heat would have to best the bulls playoff performance of 15-3 to even be in the conversation

What gets overlooked is that the Bulls went 69-13 the following season.

Someone on espn made a point about how people treat the '96 as if they're in some separate stratosphere to any other team that played before them but the '72 lakers themselves won 69 wins including that 33 win streak. That's a difference of 3 games over a full season not a huge gap.
If the heat hypothetically win 34 games and finish with 68 wins as would be their record and of course win the championship, they are definitely in that argument with the '96 bulls and '72 lakers perhaps ahead technically.

It depends on what they can do in the playoffs. They will probably still be one of the top teams the league has seen probably since the 2002 Kings or something.
I'm shocked people are just putting them right behind the 96 Bulls and are totally ignoring the 86 Celtics, 87 and 85 Lakers, and the 83 76ers.

I don't know where it puts Miami, but it sure pushes Lebron closer to GOAT status.
I say that because the Heat, while obviously talented, are also a flawed team in how they are built. They're doing this without a true PG and without a dominant C (traditionally considered the most important positions on the team).
Of course you could say the same thing about the 72-10 Bulls (Longley was decent but not anywhere near great).
Breaking that win streak will likely be seen as evidence of Lebron's greatness, not necessarily of the team's. That's probably also true of winning back to back titles.
Sweeping the playoffs would be hard to ignore though. But I really doubt they can do that.

Depends on how dominant they are in the playoffs, but they could go down as the greatest team of all time if they break the record, finish with more than 65 wins and don't lose more than 3 playoff games. Add a finals MVP for Lebron and he probably cracks the top 5 GOAT. Add a 4 peat with a 4th finals MVP and he cracks top 3 GOAT.

The honest truth is they don't need to actually break the record. The record was set in a totally different league. They've already set the record for what's considered the modern era of hoops. That said, if they do break the record, they will be one of the greatest teams of all time. I don't think it matters if they're the greatest or one of the greatest. They'll get recognition, and that's all that important. PEACE.

Re: If Miami break streak record + win title, where do they
Best team since the 2001 Lakers, top 5 all time; ranking up there with the 86 Celts, the 01 Lakers, the 96 Bulls, the 85 Lakers and really one of numerous Russell-led Celtic teams.
The thing about Miami is they're more taking advantage of the league than they are some historically great team. If they played 01 Lakers, they get murdered because they can't guard Shaq for example. I'm not taking away from the team they built this year, they're just a hard team to put against other great teams since they're so matchup driven.

Ha! Who the hell would rank ahead of Lebron with 4 Finals MVPs and 4+ regular season MVPs? Top3 is probably an insult with those credentials. PEACE.

Yup. To this day, I'm still mad the Knicks beat the Bulls the last game of the season. Preventing them from winning 70 or more in back to back seasons.

All it would show is that if you stack a team, they win. Nothing more.

Would be cool but talks of sweeping the playoffs? Lol...
I just can't see if the streak is still alive.. Beating the Spurs in SA. Or if Miami did do that, they will lose a game they "shouldn't" right after.
What's funny is Miami still needs to win 9 in a row. I mean, 9 in a row in general is tough. Man... 33 in a row is just insane. Pretty crazy were even talking about it.

Still don't get this. 7-8 weeks ago, all I heard from Heat bashers was "Lebron is basicslly back in Cleveland". Meaning, he had to carry the team all game. Now were back to "well anything they do shouldn't count because they are too good". Lol, can't be both.
Confused as well. Were the 95-96 Bulls stacked? What about the 86 Celtics? How about the 33 win streak Lakers? I always thought the object of sports teams and in business, was to get the best talent, so you can become the best team or business in your industry. Has something changed?

Re: If Miami break streak record + win title, where do they
I'd like the 85, 87 and Shaq led Lakers chances against the Heat. I'd also like the chances of the 86 and 2008 Celtics as well. Other then the Shaq led Lakers all of these series could probably go either way and that includes the better Bulls teams as well. Miami has just built a team that would be pretty much defenseless against prime Shaq so they would probably be destroyed in 4 or 5 games.
I also think the best SA Spur teams would give the Heat major problems. Miami would simply not be the same team against a combination of young Duncan and Robinson at 85%.
I like the Heat's title chances this year but I am not under any impression that they are this unbeatable team. The Heat benefit by the team(OKC) primed to get better and perhaps not choke trading away their 2nd or 3rd best player.
The competition in the EC right now is very weak so I wouldn't be surprised if Miami only loses 2-3 playoff games with most of the losses coming in the finals.

I am absolutely stunned to see so many over here say things like "Top-5 easy". I can't imagine them even beating some of the Lakers teams with Shaq on it. Who guards Shaq? And how much does PJ out-coach Spo? I mean seriously...can ANYONE see Bosh guarding Shaq 1 on 1? Does ANYONE see Haslem guarding him? At least those Nets and Philly teams had 7 footers that could get in Shaq's way. Poor Chris Bosh would be on the bench with foul trouble the entire series.
I would also take some of those San Antonio teams over this Miami team. Who guards Robinson and Duncan?
Then you have the Jordan Bulls teams, the Hakeem Rockets, and all the old Celtics/Lakers squads. This Miami team isn't close to Top-5 of All-Time. He mean hell, they are only a game or two ahead of a San Antonio team that has rested starters all year and suffered a few key injuries to key players.

Other than the shaq lakers , who on shaq alone would have a HUGE edge that series I can see miami matching up and trading wins and losses with all those other teams. Duncan and robinson's primes weren't at the same time , and you could easily flip the question and say who would guard lebron on those spurs teams?
