is the nba intentionally calling games the way they do in the regular season to maximize points and stats and then intentionally allow physical play in the playoffs to encourage closer games?

Not sure I've ever seen anything like this before. Mikal Bridges has taken 16 two point attempts and missed 15 of them through 7 quarters. 3-23 overall in the series. 0 points in 31 minutes tonight.

it has the negative side effect of increased sloppiness because players aren't used to the physicalness

I think its more the players play lazy D and don't try in the regular season, hence the layups and chucking 3's, but when they D up in the playoffs you can't get away with that so easily.

When they start to Hack-a-Mitch early, we should let Brunson & Towns rest and run a McBride - Hart/Shamet - Bridges - Anunoby - Robinson lineup to lock them up.

We can sacrifice a couple minutes of scoring from either team for the Cetlics' bigs to put themselves in foul trouble for the second half. Let's see if Mazulla really wants to get into the bonus with 8+ minutes in a quarter and what he'd do if we just let Kornet get 5 straight fouls.

absolutely!! it could not be more obvious. Regular season is all about inflating stats and fabricate arbitrary records. I mean, they even deceive you with the youtube thumbnails: 65 POINTS!! and then it's just 3 players combined.

That are almost of no value as they will end up in the low 20s. Bridges has not shot great but when he gets going he can put points in a hurry. Dude is a good player no matter what the haters say.

teams take it easier during the RS, no doubt, but the change in officiating is absurd. They even did it mid season last year, denied it and then admitted it!
