I've seen mentions of Klay, Boogie, Kobe and even Jimmy Butler(lol) but not 1 mention of Marc Gasol though wow.

EDIT: My bad, 1 mention of Marc Gasol so far.

Sorry, clear favourite AT THIS POINT in the season is Harden.

Houston owned Miami and Harden was one board short of a triple double. IF he can continue to get better playing D, then he has to be in with a really good chance. Houston off to a 5-0 start, whilst a perfect record is not sustainable, and Houston has a big challenge in the Spurs as their next game, anyone that ignores Hardens play at the moment is both ignorant, and stupid.

Yes, Houston has played Utah, Philly, Boston, Miami and LA Lakers so far, (and lets face facts, Miami is the only decent team out of those 5 so far!) However Utah just beat Cleveland, so are they really that bad? I hate to say it, but give Utah 2-3 years with this current roster, add a couple of decent Vets and they are Playoff bound.

Boogie is straight up killing teams at the moment. It seems he has managed to pull his head out of his backside, and is just more focused. He has to be in the discussion.

Griffin is playing well, but he's not there yet. He has to rely on CP3 to feed him the ball to get a lot of his scoring. Still needs to develop more post moves.

Marc Gasol, John Wall, Derrick Rose, and Kyle Lowry also deserve to be discussed.

And I am not forgetting the Splash brothers. Although I think that the Warriors are a better team than they are individual players, and Curry is going to take votes away from Thompson and vice versa.

I don't think players deserve to be in this discussion, unless their team is winning. It's that simple. Yes, we are 5 games deep. but isn't that the point?

All depends on how their teams do though..

Durant has no chance at winning the award, IMO. I made a recent thread that addressed that topic:

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1352960

All Modern Era (1979-80+) NBA MVP award winners have played at least 70 games in Non-Lockout Seasons. Durant won't play enough games to qualify for the award, based on historical precedent.

My top contenders at this time are (in no particular order):

Curry
Griffin
Paul
Rose
LeBron
Davis
Harden
Howard

Potential surprise candidates?

Cousins
Thompson
Wall
Bosh
Gasol

Nearly all Modern Era MVP award winners meet these 3 criteria:

* Played 70+ games that season
* Played on a team that won 50+ games
* Played on a team that was seeded 3rd in the Conference or higher
Jokic 31/21/22
Luka & Oscar = 5 x 27/8/8
The Brodie = All-out energy

Marc Gasol's productivity:

21.6 PTS (54.8%, 60.8 TS%), 7.8 TRB, 3.0 AST, 1.6 STL, 1.4 BLK in 36.2 minutes. 90 DRtg.

Seems to be being utilised a lot more offensively, though the percentages and volumes are likely not sustainable, I don't see 17 points on 55% TS% being unrealistic.

Memphis are, unsurprisingly, 1st in Opp/ppg and 2nd in overall defensive rating.

They did have close to a 70% winning percentage with Marc last season (if healthy, they'd project at 56 wins - 4th in the West)

Now, he probably won't win MVP but if Memphis did finish top (it's not unfeasible they pass LAC and SAS, and OKC are pretty much doomed) thanks to improvements from Conley, Courtney Lee and their bench, who knows?
There is no consolation prize. Winning is everything.

Not considering Anthony Davis??

No mention of Tim Duncan? The dude should eventually be in the conversation. His defense last night against Atlanta was ELITE!

Only 5 games played but Rudy Gay 24 ppg on 52% seems amazing. How was he so bad on the Raptors?

He was forced to be the first option, and he wasn't very fit physically. Gained too much weight over the off-season because the coaching staff wanted him to play the 4 :nonono: now, he's the second option behind the beast known as Boogie and he's thriving.

Totally disagree on LeBron, Kobe and Wade being there.. Maybe something to do with names?

If we are saying Marc with those numbers, how are we not saying Pau? He is putting up the similar numbers, better in some places worse in others.

18.8 ppg (49.8%, 55.5TS%), 10.6 TRB, 1.6 AST, 0.2 STL, 2.6 BLK in 35.7 minutes. 97.6 DRtg, 102.8 ORtg.

Marc has been slightly better offensively, Pau is rebounding and blocking better. Pau is on a new team too, and should only be getting better.

If you include Marc in the MVP race, you have to include Pau.

Because even with Pau's block numbers, Marc is still a DPOTY candidate and Pau isn't that level of a defender.
