This is the #1 high school basketball team in the country. You really think a WNBA team can hold a candle to this?

what the hell three of the kids on this team are brothers and the fourth is their cousin

some dude is out here fathering a stable of all americans

actually id say some dude is fathering a stable of fathers of all americans since one of them is a cousin.

I mean can you imagine a gorilla who can box, and knows the rules and everything? Wow, what a spectacle.

Just what in the hell are you trying to say. In the face of overwhelming physical advantages, technique and intelligence cease to matter???

Are you saying women are smarter than men!?!?!?!

In a boxing match? The human would easily win. Unfortunately for him, once the gorilla's flight or fight reflex kicks in, he would tear off some of the boxer's limbs and/or bite out his jugular.

I would say any top 10 team regardless of classification in GA could beat any WNBA team. Unquestionably. Especially if they got a D1 athlete.

Aside from the male vs female argument, some of these high school teams are stacked these days. Look at 2014 Montverde Academy. They had D'angelo Russell and Ben Simmons. They had 7-8 other division 1 commits on top of that. I'm sorry but the WNBA champs wouldn't stand a chance.

Montverde would beat them 120-2. I am talking about a team that simply makes the playoffs and is ranked in the state would clearly beat the WNBA champs.

I don't think you guys realize how much athleticism, quickness and strength advantage teen boys have over women.

I don't think an average High School team could beat the Lynx. I don't see it. But a good state high school team who's ranked and has about three to four college prospects (non D1) will kill the WNBA champs. Basketball isn't one of those fair gender sports.

I'm completely with you. I was just pointing out that the best high school team is essentially a good college team.

I wouldn't say a good college D1 team although some can be a solid college D1 team like Chino Hills or Oak Hill with Josh Smith and Rondo. ****, a good prep HS team like the one Bagley plays on can beat a JUCO team and JUCOs would kill any WNBA team with ease.

This is what this guy said on ESPN:

I work for an NBA team. The company that runs this NBA team is also in charge of a WNBA team. Before I took this job, I, too, hated the WNBA, mostly for gender reasons. After being forced to watch the WNBA, I learned to drop my gender bias, but, at the same time, developed a more sensible argument against the WNBA.

The talent level is low. I look at basketball basically on the levels of: Youth, High School, College, Minor League, and Professional. Obviously there are sublevels to all of those categories, but those are the basic five. The level of talent in the WNBA, to me, is not at the "professional" level that it promises.

I attended one of the practices for our WNBA team, and they were scrimmaging against a group of my fellow co-workers (all male) that had been thrown together that day. I have played ball with all of the men on that court, and my talent level is roughly even to theirs. The scrimmage at this practice was competitive, and very even (this was the practice, by the way, that took place before the team's first playoff game, so the intensity and focus levels were high). I am no professional basketball player. In fact, none of the guys on that court even played college basketball.

That is why I don't like the WNBA. It is truly not worth watching, from a basketball standpoint, when there is essentially year-long basketball on TV now (NBA, NCAA, FIBA, Summer Leagues, etc.). I firmy believe that a well-coached men's high school basketball team (and I'm not referring to Oak Hill, but a decently talented high school team with a few college level prospects) could beat the WNBA champion Detroit Shock 5 times out of 10.

Recap: It's not the gender, it's the talent. They just aren't good enough yet. I say yet, because I recognize the progress they've made. The NBA didn't start with the greatest talent either, and I'm sure the WNBA will eventually evolve into a watchable product.

Any playoff WNBA team would beat a boys high school team in a best of 7 series. The difference in coaching and discipline is huge. It's one thing to win in scrimmages, but across a 7 game series which is about adjustments and tactics, I think the professional coaches for the WNBA would be able to pick apart most high school systems which are pretty basic. Zone the boys up and make them shoot from the outside.

That said, I don't see why it matters. Women's sports are different from men's and whether you watch them or not shouldn't be based on whether one can beat the other. I mean college teams can't be pro ones, but people still watch college teams. Or high school teams. It's not about the level of play per se, it's about the entertainment of the competition.

The US men's soccer team can beat the Women, but I'd much rather watch our women play. They're a lot more entertaining, and the players have bigger personalities. I also really like watching the NWSL. Even the worst NWSL game last season was more entertaining than most of the Manchester United games I watched this season (smh). Women playing other women can be just as entertaining as the men's game. The NWSL is really fast and the games are really open, it's the kind of soccer I like to watch. Just like how Ronda Rousey and women's fighting has become so popular. It's not about whether they can beat men or not, it's about is the competition fun to watch. And for me, women's soccer is (women's basketball isn't).

Also the growth across all women's sports is really staggering. When you think about how little support these women get to grow in these sports, it's amazing how good they are. I really hope we can see greater support for women's sports and the respective games can keep growing.

I respect your opinion but at the same time, I think you are way off. We have so many empirical evidence against it from other sports. 15-16-17 year old male athletes routinely destroy the highest level women can offer, in any sport. You have several examples in this thread.

Remember the battle of sexes in tennis? How a semi-retired male tennis player out of the top 100 destroyed the Williams sisters? While drinking beer between the games? Then you had Lindsay Davenport's husband who never played professional tennis but played the sport in college, and Lindsay said she had no chance against him, whatsoever? I believe she was world number one back then, and did not have a chance against a male player in his 40's who never turned professional.

And that's a pure skill sport, unlike basketball. I admire women, but in the vast majority of sports the difference in skill and athleticism is simply enormous. It's like watching a different sport. Nothing to do with a lack of equality either, it's simple biology. Men are better at sports and physical activity, while women have their advantages.

I played college basketball and played v. D1 star females. They would get killed by your hood lacking BBIQ Basketball team with a 6'6 center and a bunch of kids who can dunk and beat you off the dribble with relative ease.

When you talk about men v. Women in sports. Be realistic.

Your above average high school team from Gwinnett County with 6'3 white boys who dunk and can shoot threes decently would kill them. Sometimes I don't think you guys realize the gap with levels in sports. High schools might be scrubs compared to gifted D1 athletes but they are much better than a WNBA player. It has nothing to do with skills. It's genetics. 1v1 prime Teresa Witherspoon would give you that work but 5 v 5 in a team sport v. Men with all women, Spoon isn't giving you that work.

I played Maya Moore, she was the most gifted female I've seen. She was like a solid high school male Basketball player who could play for a JV NAIA squad which is usually unheard of for a female but even she isn't close to D1 males Basketball players even with his skill level. She just isn't quick enough on that level.

Back in 2012, the (then) 2x defending CIS national champion Windsor Lancers women's team played in an open summer intramural league with a mix of amateur teams, a couple high school AAU squads, and just older washed up randoms. They finished dead last in the league, lost to everyone except our team (we lost by 2, but we were horrible).

Edit: finished, second from last. We finished last
Also, the Lancer's women's team has won the last 5 CIS championships in a row! The UCONN of the north!

When you remove the gender question from it, women simply aren't talented + athletic enough to beat any sort of talent + athleticism in basketball. What would a team of women do to score against people when they don't have any advantage at any part of the game. Also, women play primarily against women so a lot of how they shoot and get shots wouldn't even work against decently athletic men.

Women and men are equal in a lot of ways, one of the few areas they are not is basketball.

Just from reading the first page of this thread, it seems the men are already getting most of the love, but I'll add my two cents: one way to answer this question is to ask who would you'd rather watch play (i.e., who's playing at a higher level) - and I'd definitely prefer to watch a men's HS championship game over a WNBA one.

Ive kinda wondered whether the problem is fundamentally that the women are still playing a "mens" version of the game, and invariably it fails badly against men. This isn't to say that women need different rules (though in many cases they get them), but more a different philosophy. If a team of women positions 1-5 had steph (and before the flaming starts I get how special steph is, this is just a random example) level shooting, iq and ball handling skills, I don't see how they couldn't hang with highschool mens teams.

The women would be too worried about their periods and shopping to concentrate on winning the game.

I prefer the ninjas vs. Pirates debate myself.

I don't decide what I watch based on "who is playing at the higher level"--if people did that, then no one would watch College Sports at all. What's important is the competition, and the overall package the WNBA offers in terms of entertainment is higher than a high school game. The production values alone aren't even comparable. HS basketball is only interesting if you went to one of the high schools.

This is what a lot of mostly men, don't get about women's sports, and their growth in popularity. It's really not about how they would stack up against men at all. It's about how women stack up against other women. It's seeing the best women play against the best women, and seeing the game grow. The women's game is different whether it's basketball or soccer--and those differences make it an interesting product to watch.

For me, watching the NWSL is great, the smaller size of the players means that there is more space on the pitch, and it's more about passing the ball, and it's more free flowing. It's a very open game, and there isn't very much diving or simulation either. Plus when you consider these women are playing the sport they love for almost no compensation, in front of small crowds sometimes, it's pretty inspiring. And then the game has bigger characters than most other leagues. The players are very down to earth, and kind of goofy, and the teams are really funny on twitter. It's a fun league, and being able to watch almost all of the games for free on Youtube whenever you want is pretty great. Plus since it's a young league, you can watch it grow. The NWSL is already in it's 4th season which is the longest a women's soccer league has ever lasted in America. They just added a 10th team. I'm hoping they can get more money into the league so they can afford some of the better players that are playing in europe. But yeah. NWSL is great. And the US Women's National Team is really cool too. I love watching Morgan Brian control the midfield. Really excited to see how Mallory Pugh develops. And want to see Carli Lloyd take control of US Soccer. I want to see Crystal Dunn transfer her NWSL form to the national team and take over from Heath or Morgan. Crystal Dunn in NWSL last year was a beast. Her and Kim Little just dominated the league.
