Yeah, but Thon was really closer to 22 in HS, right?

I'm saying that it is unprecedented to just jump to "next Shaq?" when that would require the kid to become a freak athlete and one of the most athletic kids his age in the next 2 years or so. If it happens, cool, but just seeing tall and large and asking if the person can be the next Shaq is ridiculous.LakerLegend wrote:og15 wrote:Also here's younger Zion for example :

You don't generally go from unathletic plodder at 14 to athletic freak by 15 or 16.
Show us well known 7 footers at 14, then we can assess.
The biggest thing for a 7 footer is coordination, and this kid has it.

Give me a list of future NBA superstars who were top of their class in athleticism at 14.
This guy is 7 feet tall, show me the other 14 year old 7 footers in his class.
He like most males will experience the most physical change in his life over the next 3-4 years, we have no idea where his development will go.
Shutting the door on what he can be is short-sighted.
His height and coordination alone make him an anomaly, you can't apply the same rules to him as other people.

og15 wrote:Why would you jump to the next Shaq? Young Shaq was not obese and he was an athletic freak. Being Shaq isn't about being big, lol

Lol, just keep going with it, won't you? Many of the athletic ones were probably at the top of their class on athleticism by 14 as kids will start to differentiate more in athletic ability around that age (usually starting at 13, the boys start to get the boost). We're not talking about 10-12 year olds here, at that age, the girls are many times still as athletic as the boys, but by 13 and 14 it's totally different. We're comparing them to other 14 year olds. Look at someone like the Mikey Williams kid, you can already see the difference in athleticism compared to his peers, or Shareef O'Neal when he was that age, or someone like Cassius Stanley in 7th and 8th grade.
Look at Udoka Azubuike at 14 years old, not talking about skill or coordination for him, but athleticism and mobility:
13-14 years old is right about when many young boys start to show their athletic potential, it's not the same as being 10 or 11. Yes, we have no idea where he'll go, but doesn't mean we should jump to asking if he'll be Shaq. How about we wait till we actually see anything close to signifying someone like Shaq before we start even getting anywhere close to implying that. That's what I'm trying to say. You can't just see big and tall 14 year old and start asking if they'll be the next Shaq.

There I said it, so you don’t have to.
