Yeah, but Thon was really closer to 22 in HS, right?

You don't generally go from unathletic plodder at 14 to athletic freak by 15 or 16.

Show us well known 7 footers at 14, then we can assess.

The biggest thing for a 7 footer is coordination, and this kid has it.
Again, you aren't getting it. I'm not saying he can't get more mobile or more athletic or anything of the like. I'm saying that it is unprecedented to just jump to "next Shaq?" when that would require the kid to become a freak athlete and one of the most athletic kids his age in the next 2 years or so. If it happens, cool, but just seeing tall and large and asking if the person can be the next Shaq is ridiculous.

Give me a list of future NBA superstars who were top of their class in athleticism at 14.

This guy is 7 feet tall, show me the other 14 year old 7 footers in his class.

He like most males will experience the most physical change in his life over the next 3-4 years, we have no idea where his development will go.

Shutting the door on what he can be is short-sighted.

His height and coordination alone make him an anomaly, you can't apply the same rules to him as other people.

I don’t think we’ll see another Shaq. Dude was an athletic freak while being strong as a bull.

Is being 7'0 at 14 something positive?

I always thought that a lot of big guys in the NBA often had late growth spurts that allowed them to learn to be more skilled at a younger age. If you're 7'0 at 14 years old, you would spend most of your time trying to control your body and that height could well become a negative for the future. There are also more chances that you get to the problematic 7'4+.

Lol, just keep going with it, won't you? Many of the athletic ones were probably at the top of their class on athleticism by 14 as kids will start to differentiate more in athletic ability around that age (usually starting at 13, the boys start to get the boost). We're not talking about 10-12 year olds here, at that age, the girls are many times still as athletic as the boys, but by 13 and 14 it's totally different. We're comparing them to other 14 year olds. Look at someone like the Mikey Williams kid, you can already see the difference in athleticism compared to his peers, or Shareef O'Neal when he was that age, or someone like Cassius Stanley in 7th and 8th grade.

Look at Udoka Azubuike at 14 years old, not talking about skill or coordination for him, but athleticism and mobility:

13-14 years old is right about when many young boys start to show their athletic potential, it's not the same as being 10 or 11. Yes, we have no idea where he'll go, but doesn't mean we should jump to asking if he'll be Shaq. How about we wait till we actually see anything close to signifying someone like Shaq before we start even getting anywhere close to implying that. That's what I'm trying to say. You can't just see big and tall 14 year old and start asking if they'll be the next Shaq.

Good post but this Udoka Azubuike kid's age is a kind of suspect, just read the youtube comments. He certainly doesn't look or move like a 14 year old.

Yeah, I found it odd as well, the moment I saw the image of him. Shaq was actually quite lean when he came into the league.

If he doesn't get his weight under control, he is going to be the next Mike Sweetney.

LaMelo is considerably more athletic now than he was at 14. This kid is heavy, but as he gets older and gets to around 17-18 he should start gaining more muscle mass and leaning out.

It seems like people are missing og15's point. He's not saying the kid won't get more athletic. He's saying it's unlikely the kid is going to become the most athletic freak in NBA history like Shaq was. There's nothing to indicate that this kid will be the next Shaq, beyond him just being big.

This kid would get wrecked by some of the best players his age in the country, even more so in a couple of years. He is slow and has poor conditioning, already has joint pain and at this point he is only bullying in the post with his height against mediocre opposition.

There I said it, so you don’t have to.

It'd be good if he grew another few inches before all is said and done. And yes of course he needs to thin out as well. Not judging or criticizing him because he's still a kid and has a lot of time to mature but if he has aspirations of making it to the NBA....

As far as I know this kids a top 10 player in his class and higher than LeBron's son. Now idk if Jahzare Jackson is the next Shaq, but I'm letting everyone know right now that Emoni Bates is the next GOAT contender.
LeBron's NBA Cup MVP is more valuable than either of KD's Finals MVPs. This is the word of the Lord

Yep

I am the father of a 13 and a half yo boy

The difference between him now and at 11 is immense

At 11, he was average height, stick thin and was greased lightning for his age

He´s now over 6 foot 1 inches, starting to develop muscles but only just starting to regain his coordination

The next few years will reveal his potential not what he was like as a relative baby as his body is completely different
