Why should it be based on things that are untrue? Durant won’t play for likely all of the year and even if he does somehow make it back for the playoffs, he won’t be near 100%. Might as well assume Jonas Jerebko grew wings and can fly all around the court for easy dunks and blocks.

I think that’s what the initial plan was with this poll (when everybody’s healthy), because otherwise Durant wouldn’t be on the poll at all.

He shouldn't be on the poll at all. It's stupid. I'd like to hear why the people voting for him believe he will be a top 25 player (much less a top 4 player) in 2019-2020, which is the name of the poll.

How about we add Greg Oden "if healthy" to the poll too. He was the better prospect than KD, after all.

It’s actually not the name of the poll. The word ‘in’ isn't There. I read the poll as basically just being the 2019-2020 edition of the poll they ask every year. The description of the poll clearly states hat we can interpret it any way we want.

The criteria of ranking the players is YOUR OWN. The whole point of bringing this to the GB is to attract the widest amount of votes/perspectives on the game as possible to form a true consensus.

I voted Curry and nominate Oladipo.

Really, Irving? You really think he’s the best player left not on the poll?

If focused probably. I was thinking between him and Walker.

Why is Durant getting so many votes?

Dude is going to be out much of the season.

#4 is between AD, Curry, Embiid. I would have said Harden, but I think Westbrook relieves him of some pressure to perform at an ultra-high level.

Harden shouldn’t get penalized for that though. It’s not a 2019-2020 regular season MVP ranking or anything like that. This should be how the player would be ranked regardless of his team. It’s just ranking the players in the league based on how good you think they are (top players in the NBA).

If that's the case, LeBron is #1 still.

BUUTTTTTT I'd assume it's how you think the player is going to perform in 2019-2020 with ALL the context that comes along with it.

With THAT being said, I'd still have Giannis #1, Kawhi would be somewhere top 10, but not at #2 (again, PG loves having the ball in his hands).

Yeah, I see it as best player in 2019-2020 as there will be another poll next year. If that’s the case, why is Durant even there?

It’s not clear to me what we are voting for.

The creator of the poll put Durant’s name there for a purpose. It only says 2019-2020 because it’s a good way to label what year the annual poll takes place. Our opinions of each of the players change every year but it’s not necessarily a projection of the MVP race or anything. This means that it’s a poll of who we view as the top 25 players overall. Nba.com does the exact same thing every year but it’s just top 15 instead of top 25. Top 5 in their recent poll was 1. Kawhi 2. Giannis 3. Lebron 4. Durant 5. Curry.

The thing is though everyone’s gonna vote as soon as they open the poll. If you can’t change your vote, the discussion is 100% meaningless to who people vote for. If you can change your vote, most people will still stay with their initial impulse, but it will it least be possible to affect someone’s vote through discussion.

But the whole point of the exercise is to get the best understanding of what people really think is the hierarchy of best players. Especially since OP only lists the winner and not runners-up it's more meaningful to have the vote be a representation of people's 'initial impulse' while each thread is open. In general the way this works is that you vote then post your rationale, not about discussing and then changing your vote. Let people change their opinions for the next poll - there are 25 of them.

I like being able to change your vote for the same reason I like ranked choice voting - it allows you vote to be meaningful even if you have an outlier opinion.

Yeah, but then nobody ever gets to see the outlier opinion. That's my point.

KD won’t play during the 2019-2020 season. He won’t be a top 300 player. This will be his stat line:

He will average 0 minutes, points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks per game.

Exactly Durant shouldn't be in the poll, He's out the whole season so his ranking this year is called N/A- Not Applicable.

I voted for Jokic. Before Durant got hurt, The top 5 players were Durant, Kawhi, Lebron, Giannis and Jokic so with Durant's major injury costing him the whole year, that bumps up Jokic to #4. Anthony Davis didn't show in New Orleans that he's a winning player/ makes his teammates better he's top 10 overall but he's not top 5. Curry has always played on a stacked team even before Durant joined them, When they still had Klay, Draymond and a better bench. But if Curry is putting up MVP numbers with Durant gone and Klay is still out, than Curry would get consideration for top 5.

I don't understand this nominate a player.

I still think it's a miscategorization. I can't find a great parallel to compare it to, but it's like saying a couple of seasons ago that Markelle Fultz was the best rookie (prior to the season) even though he was hurt and out for season. If it was worded "based on talent alone and everything else being held equal, who is the best player in the NBA?" THEEEENNNNNNN I understand KD being on the list.

Lebron would still be #1 though.

Also, COMPLETE ASIDE, but your handle just convinced me to plant some ghost peppers soon haha.

Ok then. I vote Curry and based on my personal interpretation that the poll is measuring best all-time, 2019-20 version, I nominate MJ.
