Two things that have kind of soured the NBA for me and the discussion of it:

1) Eye test- Everyone is quick to jump to all of these advanced stats to support their arguments without ever watching the player actually play.

2) Context of the numbers- Like the Kanter/Gasol example you just used. That absolutely matters, yet people will dismiss it and bring in all of these stats that don't tell the full story.

Gasol is still a much better defender than LMA (a powerforward) lmao.

and also, Embiid's overall impact is still greater due to being a DPOY caliber talent. His on/off splits vs. Toronto were otherworldly.

Their regular season advanced stats are in Jokic's favor too. I mean, there's a reason he had a ton more votes for MVP and was comfortably all nba first team.

I mean I think Jokic had a better regular season, but adding in context he plays on a team much better suited for his play type and has had the benefit off continuity essentially his whole career. Embiid plays in an awkward fit with Ben Simmons which does matter.

Embiid was +88 on one leg vs Ibaka // Gasol
Jokic +60, healthy, against Kanter (w/one shoulder) Meyers Leonard, Al Farouq Aminu.

I don't think Embiid on the Nuggets lets the Blazers see GS.

You’re using the wrong advanced stats hombre. Embiid dwarfs Jokic in RAPM for example, and impact metrics > box score metrics. His effect on team success was much greater than Jokic in terms of on/off. BPM/VORP are per possession and per minute iterations of the same stat- a lesser stat.

I also agree with stormi that it can’t be understated how much playing in a seamless system can affect some of these stats. Embiid was trying to make it work with other high volume/high usage players who forced him to the perimeter, whereas Denver’s roster and game plan both revolved around Jokic.

Voted Dame, nominate Blake - two guys who seem to get slept on a lot, especially Blake. He has completely transformed his game. He now has a 3-point shot, can create for himself, and others, and doesn't rely on lobs from CP3 for 200+ dunks per season. He just had the highest scoring season of his career and only dunked the ball 37 times. The last time he averaged over 24 ppg, he had 176 dunks and made 12 3-pointers. This time he had 37 dunks and 189 made 3-pointers. Not a bad transformation for a guy whose game wasn't supposed to age well.
