Don't wanna side track too much
I had this conversation with someone in the Celtics vs Pacers thread...Who better Tatum or Sabonis??
I think Tatum's ceiling's higher, but as of "Right now", I think Sabonis is 100% better.
Better PER, Per36, and overall stats.

you say that like its a dozen teams and its true. its 2 teams and its false:
1) pre-lebron cavs
19-21 year old Kyrie joined a 19 win cavs team surrounded by hall of famers like dion waiters, tristan thompson, alonozo gee, and the corpse of antwan jamison. he got even more help when they drafted anthony bennet and signed the corpse of luol deng and earl clark:
Year 1: + 6 wins
Year 2: +4 wins
Year 3: + 9 wins
Kyrie in those 3 years: ROY, all-star, all-star
please explain how they were expected to win more
2) Celtics
Kyrie joined a 53 win celtics team basically replacing IT.
Year 1: + 2 wins
Year 2: -6 wins
The only year that kyries team "won less than expected" was last year where the owner, gm, coach, former player, current players, and radio color analyst all agree it was a team issue and not a kyrie issue.
Clearly you've done the research, so I assume you're aware that he won:
29 in his second season in the East
38 in his third season in the East
There is no question the Celtics played better without him. They dramatically outperformed expectations without him by making the ECF, and then they dramatically underperformed expectations in his second season when he played almost the whole season. If you can't acknowledge at least the Celtics part, then you are not being genuine here.
I don't care about ROY and All Star, I support a team that once had Steve Francis as its franchise player. I know how that stuff works.
Are the Trail Blazers better without Nurkic?...Because with Nurkic they got swept out of the First Round multiple times...
Then Nurkic broke his leg and Portland somehow made it all the way to the Western Conference Finals.

Re: Is Jayson Tatum a franchise player?
Depends what you consider a franchise player to be.
I compare Tatum to Joe Johnson who was a 7-Time All-Star in the East and lead his team to the playoffs as the best player for a few years. I think if all goes well he can be the primary scorer of a championship team as part of a Big 3 (a la Pierce role with the Celtics when he was a top 2 player on those teams).

Just checking in to see this thread wasn’t made by a Celtics fan.
Thank god for that.

Re: Is Jayson Tatum a franchise player?
IMO he may become a franchise level player still in Boston and the jury is partially out. I mean yr 2 looked like probably not gonna happen for him and so asking Is he a franchise play now? in the voice of Damon Wayans: nope

No, you can't. Because not every young player has performed as well as Tatum has thus far. We can't undo how he played in the playoffs as a 19 year old rookie, we can't undo the fact that he averaged over 15 PPG in a crowded field last year. What we can't know though is how far he will go...
Someone above me mentioned Harrison Barnes but that guy didn't even crack double digits in scoring until his third year in the league, when he was 22. Anyone who is betting that Tatum has already peaked is basically arguing that his career arch will be atypical.

I’m guessing that a franchise player must, by definition, be a top 30 player. In that case, I think Tatum has a very good chance of becoming a top 30 player in the league.

Man you are really set yourself up for slander if Kyrie doesn’t deliver lol. I’ll set up a crow Buffett if you’re right.

Re: Is Jayson Tatum a franchise player?
I'm a huge Tatum fan, but this season will be very telling. I think he can be a fringe top 10-15 player eventually, but if he doesn't take a big step forward this season, I will have to scale back my expectations.
I think he averages something like 21/7/3.5 on 46/39/85ish splits. He HAS to get to the line more as well, i want him to be around the 5 FTA number this season. I am pretty confident that he makes the all star team this year as well. Everybody, feel free to rip me for this opinion if I'm wrong.
One thing i can say for sure, way too people sleep on his ability defensively.

Re: Is Jayson Tatum a franchise player?
I suspect that if you put Tatum on a really bad team, he can ramp his production and be viewed as a Devin Booker type of a talent. However, in this crowded Celtics team, I don't see how his production will not come expense at others like Howard/Brown. The Celtics will have trouble keeping all their four core players (Kemba, Tatum, Howard, Brown) happy this season as I see one or two players struggling.

Re: Is Jayson Tatum a franchise player?
Way too early to tell with Tatum, but he needs to make the game easier for himself. He needs to get stronger so he can force teams to foul him on his way to the hoop. And he needs to find ways to get easy buckets. If you ask me, playoffs reveal the truth. Go back to what he did 2 years ago in the playoffs. I think he's a soon to be star and a franchise player. Now does that mean he'll be a true 1? Jury's still out. But I will say that this year was very concerning in that regard.
People in here compare him to Kobe. This is misguided. Kobe got better every year when he was just starting out. Same with T-Mac, major leaps every year. Not only did Tatum not take a step forward, numerous parts of his game took a step back. Also very concerning for Tatum is his low assist numbers. I also think Tatum is severely lacking in the b-ball iq area. A lot of wasted dribbles. A lot of wasted energy. I think eventually he'll figure it out. He has all the tools.

Absolutely not. The question is more could be develop into a franchise player which I am still leaning towards no on. I think he's more all star level at best even 3-4 years from now.
