I wonder what they're going to pay Tatum next year? Full max I suppose..Also Hayward is probably a goner as soon as he gets any of his trade value back.

Even if Brown has another mediocre season (I think he'll play better than he did last year with some of the ballhogs gone) there's a chance he still would've been the top FA next summer albeit restricted. I think Ainge's hands were a little tied here.

He better start making all star teams or winning some type of rewards. That’s show up and show out money

I agree that it’s an overpay, but Ainge is betting on Jaylen Brown’s potential ceiling at only 22 years old, which is much higher than Buddy Hield’s. Whether he reaches that ceiling or not, only time will tell. This could end up being a fair deal, or a dramatic overpay based on what Jaylen becomes over the next 4 years.

But why extend a year early if youre hoping for future improvement? You can wait the year, see how he has progressed, and then give him the max if he deserves it. He clearly does not based on his production thus far in the NBA

Crazy this bum is getting paid only $15M less than Pascal. He is worth Hield money at best

He doesnt deserve more than Buddy money, no more than Aaron Gordon money, Lavine money, etc.

4/80 (like lavine and gordon I think) would have been the most i offered, or just match in RFA

With all things considered I will probably have LeVert before Jaylen.

As for Jaylen vs. Buddy... they excel at different things. Buddy is definitely better at his thing (shooting) than Jaylen is at his thing (defense, physicality), tho. Odd that Jaylen would command so much more guaranteed money.

I think people are overreacting a bit tbh. Yes, it’s a definite overpay, but Ainge was never going to let him walk and Brown is still only (soon to be) 23. This contract is based on potential, which could pan out or backfire. Only time will tell.

Also, the Celtics aren’t winning it all anytime soon, but their core is young outside of Kemba. If things pan out for them with Brown, Tatum, and company, they could be contending in 2-3 years, as Lebron and these other guys get old and their window closes. Still a big risk though, so I get it.

What's the motivation to give this awful deal now? He'd have to be a legit all star to command 30m a year and he's barely an above average starter. I'm just befuddled

The problem is Ainge didnt need to take that risk. he could have let Brown prove his worth and either earn that money on the court or earn it by singing an offersheet at that price with another team

Ainge giving him 29 million now is taking all the risk for no reason. you extend him when its more team friendly (see hield, sabonis, levert) not when you are backing up the brinks truck

Wait until Jayson "Diet-Sprite Kobe" Tatum is due for an extension.

Ainge should be drug tested.
