I don't remember many times he did more with less. I'm not saying he's a bad coach, but I do think an average coach could win with the rosters he had.

The Bulls were basically the villains to my 90s Pacers teams, and I despise almost everything Lakers out of pure principle, but I never found this argument that Jackson only won because of the talent he had on his rosters to be persuasive.

All those top players he coached have a total of one ring without Phil Jackson, and it's not because they lacked the opportunity.

I'm not saying the only reason Jackson won was because of those players, I'm simply saying every time he did win, he had far and away the most talented team in the NBA. I can't remember ever seeing a Phil Jackson team overachieve.

He's in the second tier with the Spo's of the world. And having a coach at that level is an incredibly valuable asset in the NBA

This just isn't even remotely close to being true.

Not to mention, Carlisle's Mavericks beat Spoelstra's Heat with much less talent.

he will not be in the conversation when they talk about the greatest coaches ever. he just won't
it's just a really really short list

sometimes the smell test is good enough

No, I appreciate him, but it's very easy to coach Mavs. You just have to:

1) Start with Doncic (obvious), Porzingis, (not so obvious, but he's the future bet), and 3 more who didn't play well last time

2) Let Luka go crazy the first qtr, and remove him at the end, for him having time to rethink his errors and read the game. At the same time, go making some rotations.

3) Through 2nd qtr, Rick already sees which bench players are hot today. You never know who they are, but there are ALWAYS 2-3 who will play as stars this game. (NOTE: They WON'T play good next game, hence Point 1).

4)Reinsert Luka again. At the 3rd quarter, Luka and the bench already have control of the game.

5) If everything goes like planned in the 4h qtr, as usual, it's Luka's long-term Load Management time, so sit him as soon as posible. The idea is to get a Dirk 2.0 for 20 years, while at the same time not elevate too much his ego with scoring records, triple doubles, etc.

And that's it.

He also never posted a sub .500 record so I think it's fair to say he wasn't an underachiever either. The guy knew what he had and understood how to get his team to where they needed to go.

Underrated, solid basketball mind with no gimmicks, but outside GOAT level... probably top 10

Carlisle can somehow fashion a strong bench unit with just about anyone you throw at him. Sometimes the Mavs are more fun to watch when Luka's sitting just because they run some beautiful Portland-esque actions with their guys as opposed to spamming spread pnr
LeBron's NBA Cup MVP is more valuable than either of KD's Finals MVPs. This is the word of the Lord
