There's this myth that total foul calls had reached unfathomable levels compared to the nostalgic 90's but the facts never backed that argument up.

Which doesn't change the fact that this cleanup of the rules, which has been inconsistently enforced, is good for the game and was a long time coming...

Smart over Lowry on peak both both have very long primes.

Hopefully when the NBA does their 50 greatest floppers of all time both are 1st ballot. Smart should be unanimous GOAT. Some of his best ones I ain’t even mad in fact it’s impressive to put that kind of acting and passion into it.

The fish flop is the best one ever! (He actually hurt himself that’s dedication to your craft)

Shoving people at the rim is not defense

you see what you want to see but the game is played on both ends. Nobody wants 2004 piston era basketball but that doesnt mean this era is perfect. There is a nice middle ground which will allow for good competitive basketball.

nba also need to heavily reduce video replay, it ruins the flow of sport.

I simply love the new rules. No more flailing of arms to get the fouls called, no more foul baiting and offensive players initiating contacts to get the fouls etc. LOVE IT.

Now the only thing that is left that needs to be changed is the fouls to prevent fast breaks. That should also be changed to "unnecessary contact" and offensive team should be awarded 2 FTs and a ball coz I love to see the fast breaks and excitement which these stupid fouls prevent it.

It's as if this has to be black or white...

How about you don't call a foul when the offensive player is creating the contact, but you actually call the foul when the defender is hacking the offensive player?

It looks like the refs have gone too far to the other side. If a guy is hit to the point that he can't make his shot : it's a foul. There are many exemple of that in the video, and the NBA has never let those fouls go as far as I remember.

It’s not offensive foul. If you’re baited in to committing a foul then play better defense. You can now jump at jump shooters without being penalize. This will happen again

This was a straight up dirty play and has nothing to do with the rule change.
Sliding under a jump shooter remains a flagrant foul.

Hahaha prison basketball. Feels good for once that players have to try and put the ball in the basket instead of instigating contact.

Having put up with what Michael Jordan did to my Cavaliers so many years ago, I've never been fond of the idea of offensive players getting rewarded for initiating contact. As I've always understood it, the defender is just as entitled to his space/path as the offensive player.

I'm not even sure I blame a defensive player for sticking out an arm to slow an offensive player trying to drive right through him, any more than I blame an offensive player for sticking out his off arm to keep a defender away from the ball.

The rules for drawing a charge are so specific, it's only symmetric that the rules for drawing a block be equally challenging. Which yes, would leave us with a lot of no calls.

Right or wrong, calling the games this way will help to stop theatrics. I mean, seriously, throwing away the ball just to try to force the refs to blow their whistle? That's turrible. At least play through contact, try to score, and maybe you get a whistle.

There are numerous posts by Trae/Curry fans and a couple Hardens sprinkled in all decrying the lack of bailout calls for their favorite floppers.

I'm a Bulls fan and Zach Lavine has been fouled with no call several times this season, he whines but then he takes the ball harder to the rim. Basketball shouldn't be about who can trick the refs the best or who can flop the best.

A general rule, if you wouldn't do it in a pickup game, don't do it.

I think this observation gets overlooked. If anyone playing street ball tried some of the antics Harden/Young were doing to get to the free throw line would get kicked off the court immediately.

levon wrote:I think the NBA has overcorrected a bit. Defenders are being really physical inside and some of those deserve to be fouls. The other thing I'm noticing is continuations are completely broken, which started a few years ago.

Yeah I think the rule changes are great but they have let a lot slide that shouldnt. Last night Fred Van Vleet get decked on a floater attempt with no call for example.

Intentional fouls to stop fast breaks is something they'll have to change too, im presuming next year because its been so blatant. Athletic had a good article about it. with the lower number of foul calls players/teams are less likely to be in foul trouble so they are doing those intentional fouls to stop the clock and prevent an advantage or to get a breather

again when you’re using guys like trae and harden as examples, they’re the reason why this rule is in place

Kobe187 wrote:I actually think more still has to be done, this rule is a great step as the players were making a mockery of the game by deliberately drawing fouls, the uptick in flopping was making the league seem like a joke. In the NHL if you “dive” or “flop” trying to draw a penalty you get a 2 minute penalty for diving, the NBA should do the same and hand out technical fouls for flopping.

walt frazier says the next step is punishing guys that foul to prevent the fast break because the fast break is very exciting to watch

I'm convinced the only people against the change are fanbois who just wanna see their favorite player put up #s so they can tell themselves how great that player is, and fans of American football who find fastpaced action disconcerting and need 3 minutes between plays to process what is happening.

I watched that whole video and its wrong.

The game has never been better, and if it reverts, im done. I was on the verge of bailing altogether and the Pistons sucked me back in with the #1 pick, and now that games are amazing to watch? I'll never go back to touch foul basketball.

The guy talking in that video can kiss my ass. If anything, let even more go. I want them to stop handing out techs for minor altercations altogether like they did back in the day. Play on. Let benches clear again. Play on.

I want this pushed even further.
