Watching live commentary by other GMs, like Anish, he will give what he believes is the obvious natural move. The other GMs will agree, then Magnus plays something that wasn't even considered and they then say "well, looks like that was the top engine move...".
Magnus is just a machine. Sure you argue Bobby peaked higher, or Kasparov was dominant longer, and obviously modern players have a computers to help analyze, but when you consider the accuracy Magnus plays with, his dominance at Blitz, Rapid, and Classical, hard to imagine anyone who has ever played could match that.

Even Stockfish agrees —

Anyone saying he isn’t ain’t really following or has been following- people are better now than when your boy Bobby F was playing. Nepo or even Hikaru or Anish would have a classical WC…

When Magnus won a blitz chip I became a believer-

Dude is Jordan

He dominated this series at a level that was crazy. He just flat out crushed this.

As opposed to previous title matches that he only won in tiebreak.

(Tiebreak is like overtime, except with massive rules changes, in that the time controls are greatly faster.)

Carlsen is unquestionably better. Fischer can only be argued to be greater via some kind of era-adjustment argument.

Tough to compare, in Chess (more so than most sports) you build off of the greats before you, though the computer age slightly changes that. Bobby’s run was also much shorter than even Magnus (Bobby obviously exiled himself), but more dominant and he was probably farther ahead of the competition than Magnus. Kasparov has the best case for GOAT still.

I'd play up the significance of computers, actually, in that they utterly change training and preparation.

I had no idea Chess worked that way. I just always assumed Bobby Fisher was the goat because of the movie.

Fisher wouldn’t be top 20 or maybe he would be even worse. He famously didn’t respect the prep or the memorization and at some and at some point these guys are now so ready because of the tools that he wouldn’t be able to keep up.

And that’s not an insult, it’s just realizing that these guys took a quantum leap in the last 2 decades and that created magnus... he is legit like Jordan in the way he is keeping other great players from shining.

The reason we know this is because we can analyze old games and they see the flaws in these former players positions...

In other words, great moves would be blunders now a days....

It’s all positional up until minute variation....

Plus his end game set up is ungodly

That's not a difference I'd stress, since Carlsen doesn't play the openings particularly sharply either.

I don't buy that, since there's little evidence he did anything else with his time.

Also, anecdotes suggest that he pretty much had memorized every game in Chess Informant.

I wonder how many people actually know the different style of games played.

It’s classical, Magnus is some grim reaper god machine and that goes for every single greatest chess player before him.

Dude won blitz world and held all the major prizes in one season.

No one is on his level

Caruana aside, is there that much difference between the classical and speed chess rankings?

By the way -- I think Fischer's blunder in Game 1 of his World Championship match was as bad as any of Nepo's in this one.

Absolutely demolished Carlson in the Fischer random world championship where you have limited prep since the positions of the pieces are random

Carlsen's Twitter feed is heavy on basketball, but doesn't make him look like a Sixer fan at all.

chessgames.com seems not to have that tournament now, although it's had Random960 games in the past. (I even successfully submitted some as GotD.) Does another site have them?

If you look up Fischer random world championship on chess24.com you'll find the games.
It was just surprising how much Wesley dominated Carlson in his prime at random960, But Carlson is still the better chess player in general.

Ummm, this is utterly wrong. He studied and memorized as much as anyone to ever live when he was working on his game. He ALSO didn't like that aspect of the game, but make no mistake he was a guy who studied the theory like crazy. But he was as good as anyone ever at memorizing theory and then innovating from it. Outside of a few guys...like Magnus.

My point is if you are crazy and dismissive and not committed, you won’t be able to compete with the guys that are all in on chess, with great tools, are as talented as you AND love the game....he hated chess and said it all the time and thus didn’t spend as much time doing it....

Again I just don’t think someone that hates something is going to beat someone that’s committed to the game and is as talent and more committed. But can I prove it...naw

This is a situation where one guy has been dominant for an extended period of time and one that is more of a legend like a figure that didn’t do it long enough to be relevant outside of the US. Russian always clown Americans when our best actual player in my day was Seattle”s own Yasser Seirawans....enough talk - DM and we can settle this on chess.com right now....

The crazy old man and the young version who dominated for a short period are two rather different people ultimately.

One tournament. Carlsen was the Random960 champion the previous year, albeit in a less official competition.

Weak era of Chess. Way less physical than the 90's.

Haven't laughed so hard in weeks. :D

Sixers theme song is the best in the NBA.

For a Sixers-themed song (not theme song), I've always been partial to this one:
Just because it happened to you, doesn't make it interesting.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

Yesterday I was lying; today I'm telling the truth.

For reference of Magnus drawing Gary as a kid.

The World Championship match was one of the most lopsided ones in history, unfortunately. Game 6 was a game for the ages but Nepo's blunders will forever be the memory of this championship. I'm hoping to see a Magnus vs Firouzja in the next WC match, as it seems Magnus' attention was heavily raised by the rise of the Alireza, reaching 2800 ELO and claiming it kept his motivation as well as he mentioned during a press conference. Also looking forward to the Blitz World Championship, as Magnus already stated he would participate. If he wins the double he'll be the undisputed best player, as people were questioning the skillgap between him and other superGM's.
