Let's leave color out of this, the man is a great coach regardless of his ethnicity.
He made the Celtics play for each other and hold themselves accountable - which was a culture I didn't think could be changed given the personnel that team has had the last 5 years.

I think it's worth pointing out because 'narratives' still exist to belittle black head coaches. Many are looked at as 'player coaches' and very often do not get anywhere near the respect for their ability to game-plan and its viewed as a "they can communicate" with the other "black players" better because they're black.
Dude is straight-up a super intelligent guy who knows the game extremely well. It's not about his attitude, his persona, his relationships with players. He's a very intelligent and capable basketball guy period.

Brad Stevens was the most overrated coach of his (relatively brief) era, and by the time he left, the level of underperformance and lack of cohesion was through the roof. It’s so impressive how Ime has cleaned up the mess he was left and finally harnessed Boston’s talent. They are as in it as any team.
I will not tolerate any Brad Stevens slander.
Brad was a brilliant coach, but he never got to coach a team with no exploitable players on defense...Ainge always gave him an undersized lead guard like IT, Kyrie, and Kemba, who were all bad defenders who could be targeted in the playoffs. The benches he had to work with were really uninspiring too, with very limited players who he managed to squeeze maximum production out of. Now that he's an executive, he went out and created a team he would've loved to coach.
But I'm really happy with Ime. What an absolute slam dunk hire by Brad. He's also lucky he caught the Jays at the right time, when they're ready to take the next step. Brad knew they platueaed under him, so stepping down was one of his best moves.

Got anything to do with his success with the celtics?

5 of the Celtics' 17 championships have been won with Black head coaches.
That includes 5 of the 7 cases where the coach was a former NBA player, and 0 of the 10 cases where he was not.
Red Auerbach 9
Bill Russell 2
Tom Heinsohn 2
Bill Fitch 1
KC Jones 2
Doc Rivers 1

They're much more flexible, pragmatic and bold than the previous generation of coaches, besides Spo and to a lesser extent Kerr.

Nick Nurse should be in there.

They can communicate better because last time I checked most black coaches have had previous NBA experience and can communicate with current players better on that level. If you've recently done the same job as people you are now managing and instructing on how to do their job, you are going to have better communication. This is regardless of what industry you're in. This is a strength, not a weakness, and should not be interpreted as one. A person that has relevant experience is much more likely to make sense to an individual filling that role currently and gaining that respect. it's a reason why in the IT sector, a lot of coding shops have dysfunction when they stick a manager with "managing experience" and no coding experience to manage a room full of coders.
All of the positive adjectives you used to describe Udoka are in large part because he's played the game. It just so happens that the majority of NBA players that play the game are black AND Udoka being a former player; has used his experience and insight to help build himself into a great coach. It has NOTHING to do with color, it has to do with experience of the current dynamic of the NBA and relatability to the current group of NBA players. We need to stop making everything about color. Sports should unite people not the other way around.
Ime Udoka is a helluva coach. Period.

picc wrote:While everyone's piling on KD/Nash/Kyrie/etc., and deservedly so, I have to give some props to Ime Udoka for the job he's doing coaching this Celtics team.
He's made them tougher, physically and mentally, throughout the season, and its showed during this series. They respond to every big shot, they play physical as hell, they contest everything, and they don't let you have anything easy.
His defensive gameplan on Durant has him looking like a local YMCA recruit, and the way the team rotates and helps on defense is amazing.
So impressed with the mentality he's implemented in this team, the way they execute on defense, and their "f-you" attitude.

I know the reference to race was only mentioned to tease Jay Williams for his stupid tweet, but at this point the thread is fully derailed and on the verge of getting locked.
Everyone get off the race debate and personal insults and get the thread back on track, please.
