range of motion, let's say you're squatting 200kg. if im 7'7 and i have to squat to same depth as someone 5'7, that's 2 extra feet(not really) of distance that i have to travel with 200kg on my back that's a much harder lift.

Ok.... then this is a hard comparison because a bigger guy lifts a longer distance and longer time....

Yup, different sports emphasize different athletic traits. American football is apex explosive strength/speed. It is quite poor for endurance relative to soccer hand eye coordination/muscle memory isn't nearly as important as tennis.

Basketball players really aren't built for squatting

Idk who it would be but it's prob a thicker SG or a shorter SF. Ballhandlers typically aren't that thick and wouldn't likely be it. I'd also wager it's not a good, well known player lol. Like a young Jae Crowder or Semi is a good choice as well like above.

I'm way out of my depth here but I'm looking for a guy with a non-traditional basketball body who weighs a lot. It most likely is some dude who barely makes the NBA

have you tried running the ATG program?

I have beaten myself up from 20 years of rugby and then onto recreational powerlifting, he's got me feeling good as new

I haven’t but I’ll do some research thanks.

Surprised no one has said PJ Tucker yet. Mans looks like he could squat a school bus.

Meat is on the right path... think about levers and physics. It's generally never the tall guys ,they're at a mechanical disadvantage.

What would the utility of weight lifting heavy squats be?

From my understanding, NBA players need explosive optometric driven movements. Slow heavy squats would only really help the back to the basket types, as they’d use strength with bent knees.

Think a Karl Malone, or Gianni’s even in todays day (doesn’t use back to basket as much).

Maybe Embiid but with the surgeries probably not.

Elite scorers like Giannis, Durant, Lenoard, LeBron or even Booker and Chris Paul post up when defenses are set.

Not only lower body but core strength is essential if players wish to take and play through contact and core strength is not gained by a 1000 crunches but during compound movements like squats and overheard presses.

strength is strength, it's always going to be useful. Squats will help you run faster, jump higher, recruit more fibers, be more explosive. All the sports with forward motion, ie rugby which i played, had me squatting 60-75% of 1 rep max 5-6 times a week.

It's called torque... It's a quite simple principle in physics. Torque = Force x Distance.

Think of a breaker bar or torque wrench. You didn't magically get stronger to break a bolt loose... The longer the handle on a breaker bar is, the more torque you can apply.

Now think of doing something like say a bicep curl... The longer your forearm is, the more torque you have to apply to lift the dumbbell.

Edit:. Other people are close when talking about distance and "leverage".. but they're not quite there and missing the basic principle. It all boils down to torque.

Squatting is a short man’s game. So probably someone like Marcus smart.

Weight x (vertical leap) certainly sounds like a good metric from which to start guessing.

That said, some big-guy hopless wonders can probably squat a lot too. E.g., Grant Williams supposedly has lost a lot of vertical leap from college, but he's a super-strong guy even so.

Vertical leap has nothing to do with squatting, it's how fast you twitch your muscle, and it's irrelevant to grinding weight slowly.

Wonder how much someone like Drummond could do. That man has tree trunks for legs.

Steph has tiny legs lol. No chance.

Do people here not work out? Lotta weird answers so far. And people don’t seem to understand that vertical leap doesn’t have really anything to do with how built your leg muscles are. It’s quick twitch muscle fibers, achilles length, and other factors that are simply genetic.

I’m 5’9 and used to be able to dunk off oops a few years ago when I was 135 lbs soaking wet and could only squat 135 for reps. My legs were toothpicks. Now at 170 (at the same body fat %) after 5 years of consistent lifting, I’m squatting 2.5 times what I was, yet my vertical has decreased a solid 3-4 inches and I can’t dunk anymore. Just because I’m carrying more weight on me now, even if it is due to muscle.

Boban would be one of the worst options to choose

Slava wrote:This has been discussed before. The guys who lift heaviest are usually shorter, stockier with smaller wing spans. So NBA players in general won't be the best at it, but if you were to pick one, it'd likely be someone that resembles a fire hydrant, like Kyle Lowry.
