Think TJ McConnell. He was basically the reincarnation of Steve Blake, Blake may have been slightly better though

He sucked but thought very highly of himself, he's still hated in Milwaukee for being a little **** while here. Couldn't stand to be away from his man Juan Dixon lol without becoming disgruntled.

Let’s put it this way. Blazers don’t typically land good players. Blazers were able to land Blake 3 times.

He was ok. Played hard, feisty. Decent backup but not ultra-talented.

On the surface he had good playmaking ability, could should from 3, play defense, was tough, would accept his role, and had good bball IQ but he would never be all of these things at once. He would also never even do just one of them reliably.

He Was very frustrating to watch because you would think there’s no reason why this guy couldn’t be a dependable player on a winning team, but he never would be.

As a POR fan, I got to see him play for the Blazers three separate times. The first time, he was a solid player on a bad team (paired with his former college teammate Jaun-on-Five Dixon). The second time, when paired with Brandon Roy, he had the best, most consistent season of his NBA career.

He was the starting PG on a 54-win team. He averaged 11 ppg, 5 apg and shot .427 from 3 on the highest volume of his career. Nate McMillan LOVED Blakey. He loved him so much, he kept starting him after the Blazers signed Andre Miller. Blake was a much better 3-point shooter than Miller, so he could play off the ball and spread the floor, creating space for Roy to operate.

So, for at least one season, he as a dependable player on a good team. As a OR fan, I'm probably biased, because I got to see Blake at his best. His first thee seasons in POR he shot .413, .406 and .427 from 3-point range. For at least those three seasons, he did (at least) one thing consistently well.

I was going to say “except for one year in Portland where he was solid” but he was never able to replicate that anywhere else. Especially with the lakers who had a better team. Blake also had some weird injuries too tho if I remember correctly

Steve Blake put in many years of service in the NBA as a solid back up point guard. His strength was not shooting, although he could knock down the occasional three. He was an extremely good ball handler with great court vision, although he was pass first always. His perimeter defense was definitely above average and he was tougher than one might expect. Excellent teammate and very quiet demeanor.

if you like guys who score about 8 ppg on inefficient shooting and can't really defend much, but are considered "tough" (read: white), then he's your guy.

he was a good passer/playmaker i guess. nothing special but pretty good.

Career backup PG who played well enough in some stretches to be a starting PG on an elite team

Btw, I think the 6’3” listing on basketball-reference is very generous. I met him at a charity game in Portland, and I’m only 5’9”, and he didn’t seem nearly half a foot taller than me.

Played college 'ball at Maryland, and played 14-years in the league.. he had a solid career as a backup rotational PG = not "sucked".

White guys are tough?

I know he’s best known for his Portland and Laker days but before that he did an admirable job of fitting in and stabilizing a rather chaotic Nuggets team with Melo, Iverson and JR Smith on it.

I’m surprised by some others calling him a frustrating player, I thought he maxed out on his potential and was a classic overachiever. He wasn’t particularly good at any one thing. He still made it work and mostly played mistake-free basketball. Not at all a surprise that he was able to stick around for so long.

you must have missed the quotes around "tough". meaning i was being facetious. i think people say he's tough because he's a little white guy. the same way white guys always "play hard" and are "deceptively athletic" the fact is he wasn't any tougher than anybody else.

Harry Garris wrote:He would have been a really solid backup point guard. Kind of like a Monte Morris type of player who's great at running mistake free offense and providing shooting.

Unfortunately for us he wasn't a backup - he started for a couple of years alongside Brandon Roy. And in that role he was a bit over his head.
This.

He was a solid role player but not an ideal starter.

He had one of the best nickname's on this forum, "Soft Porn", cuz the boi never penetrates.

And his counter part, Corey "Hard Porn" Maggette, always penetrates, even when he shouldnt.
