Even Magic vs Bird took place during the tail-end of the shorty-short era - they're practically briefs:

Shaq protested this and said there was no way in hell he was wearing any kind of "John Stockton shorts". Then as a joke, Stockton actually mailed a pair of his uniform Jazz shorts to Shaq.

Shaq opened up the package and put Stockton's on in the locker room and walked around. Hilarity ensued. Again, it's too bad that nobody recorded this and saved it on youtube.

Short shorts were big in the 80s. Stock just never updated his fashion, kind of like Kawhi rocking cornrows. Thing is its been so long that short shorts are back in fashion, although no where near as it was in the 80s.

Verdict: He was not ahead of his time. He was just stuck in the past.

Fashion, like much of humanity, is cyclical
LeBron's NBA Cup MVP is more valuable than either of KD's Finals MVPs. This is the word of the Lord

For shame. Feel bad for the young cats nowadays. The booties just don't look as good in these wide ass jeans compared to the skinny jeans days lol

That was the 70s so he was actually 20 years behind the times.

and yeah... i consider short shorts to be like they wore in the 60's where they look almost like briefs. i'd say most times shorts have been more or less the same length they are now.

don't let a brief time in the late 90s/early 2000s fool you!

50's
60's
70's
80's

All of them were wearing SHORT shorts. The league even with shorts getting a bit shorter are still long by historical standards.

I was born in 1980 and I remember short shorts were the style up until around the very late 80's. Late 80's/early 90's is when style kind of transitioned into baggy shorts being the trend. If you were wearing short shorts in like 1988 or 1989 it was still cool, but if you were still wearing short shorts in 1991 you would be getting clowned.....lol. That's how I remember it.

90's style was perfect IMO, baggy but not too baggy. A bit loose fitting and just a bit below the knee. The very late 90's/early 2000's was terrible, way too baggy. Clothing style in general was terrible in that time period, and I thought it was terrible at the time and I was still my early 20's so it's not like I was some old guy just yelling at the clouds. I remember being 21 and thinking, this is awful, why is this becoming the trend?? Grown men looking like 7 year olds wearing their dad's clothes. That era style wise can be summed up in those pictures of TJ Ford from 2003.

I'm pretty sure the Fab 5 gets credit for the change in basketball, not sure about elsewhere.

Jordan got flack about it when he went to baggier shorts which was pre Fab 5, The Fab 5 is when it became a staple for all players entering the league though at that point. Before Jordan was the GOAT our an NBA champion he was nothing but a show off ball hog to a lot of people and they didn't like his rebellious long shorts. Bad for the sport. Jordan's shorts weren't actually baggy though he just had them made longer. The Fab 5 did take it to a new level for sure and that became the culture after them.

if we're talking girls, tight LOW LOW wasted jeans need to come back.

No man should EVER wear anything tight in terms of pants...nobody wants to see that on the 99% of dudes who end up wearing it!

nice edition. I knew MJ's shorts were a touch longer, but I didn't recall it having a cultural impact. I just couldn't have stated why, that makes sense.

I was born in '83 and still remember when I was 11 and wore short shorts in gym class. I was ridiculed for it, and this was back in '94. I agree I thought the extreme baggy clothing of the late 90's and early to mid '00s was ridiculous at the time. Then it jumped the shark to the other extreme of skinny jeans which I thought was equally stupid. I like to wear clothes where it's not tight but not baggy either.

And I think the reason that players started to reverse over time up to today is because it wasn't really practical, especially in the 00s when it went overboard with how baggy things were. If you're working out or exercising intensely you want your clothes to be as light as possible. It's crazy to think how thick the material used to be for basketball shorts in the late 90s and 00s and how much it's improved over time.

I dunno man, a bit more length and thickness isn't a bad thing when you fall...
