6.7 million people watched the Pro Bowl last year. That was the lowest number in 16 years. But that still did better than the NBA All star game which did 5.9.

I don’t think the NBA All Star game has the impact of is as popular as some here think it has. The NBA All star game is usually 3rd in popularity in All Star games (MLB is #1).

I think solely looking at the T.V ratings is a problem. Other than the fact TV ratings are quickly becoming old media, one must also look at Social Media engagement (which the NBA has done well with and the MLB has struggled with), international engagement, the weekend as a whole compared to other sports (the home run derby is the only other Major event I could think of for the other major sports). I think you are leaving out a lot of factors in terms of general engagement/ratings if your main focus is just TV ratings.

I mean the majority of social media engagement for the NBA All star weekend is horrible year after year. It’s just people bashing on it constantly.

And we see a microcosm of that on here every year. It’s just constant threads and posts saying “it’s gotten so bad, it’s time to just end this”, “who even watches this anymore” and so on.

I’m just stating that the impact and relevance of the All Star weekend is getting exaggerated on here. I’m sure if you were to take a poll with NBA fans If they would care if it didn’t happen, the majority would say no. Then if you were to poll the casual sports fan if they would care, that number would be even more drastic on the don’t care side.

Social Media engagement is just more than negative topics on a forum (even though negativity can be seen as engagement it self and forums themselves are pretty old compared to the recent media), it's a variety of things. For example the NFL pro bowl game highlights in 2022 on the NFL's YouTube channel had 3 million views; however, the highlights for the NBA all star game for the NBA channel was 8 million and this does not include the the house of highlights channel of 3.2 million. Now think of tik Tok highlights, Instagram, and Twitter. All this is engagement and complex. Rappers such as NBA young boy and social media personalities such as Andrew Tate have gotten big this way. They have gotten little to no attention through traditional media but made their fame through social media.

NBA all-star weekends are a massive cultural event for younger and more diverse groups. I feel like if you are older or not part of those groups or don't take part in the events you won't understand.

Ratings is far more complex today compared to yesteryear when the only forms of media was TV and radio.

I keep hearing about social media engagement which is obviously an important metric nowadays but I guess I've never understood exactly how much the NBA or other big entertainment entities are actually making money off it or if social media engagement is as valuable financially as ratings still are. You really don't hear about social media engagement with the college football playoff or college football in general compared to the NBA but clearly the NBA is not the juggernaut that college football is financially.

Yeah, I can't tell you how corporations or social media personalities leverage social media popularity into profits you would have to speak someone in the industry. However, social media engagement is one of many ways to tell how popular something or someone is.
