You mean you weren't convinced about this thread by my amazing sales job in the OP?? This is a very exciting new thread!

I know what you're saying but I honestly don't think thread is going to get super-mega-long, for a while at least. The peak of last week's Wembanyama fever seems to have passed and I don't think he'll be making a ton of news in the short term. And we did this thread a little different by not merging all the other ones into it and making a big mess to start out with.

The point of this thread was mostly to make people stop making an entirely new thread for every Wembanyama-related thought that pops in their head. We had at least 9 of them going on at the same time and they were mostly redundant and we kept getting new ones. If this thread become cluttered we can revisit later.

Yes understood! I wasn’t trying to call you out I have just been on forums where there are mega threads and you would have one thread for everything Lebron repeated etc and it’s a mess. That’s why I’ve been anti mega thread for so long but I understand it’s use here. Have a good Sunday okay?

No worries. I'm open to feedback and don't get everything right. Have a good Sunday too, buddy!

Richard Jefferson has stated if Lebron was in the same draft class as Victor he would go #2... Which is crazy to me considering the hype Lebron got in high school. I mean his highschool games where on ESPN.

What are y'all thoughts on this?

I honestly think what RJ said is not that crazy. Not the Wembanyama is a better player than Bron going into the draft, and not that he will end up being as good as Bron became. It's just Wemby's skillset and mobility at his enormous size scream #1 pick and would be hard to pass on in a draft. If you have to pick one of two elite prospects in a vacuum you probably take the giant.

Doing things against a g-league squad - maybe 2-3 will ever see an nba court. His numbers in Europe are not good, and he’s doing it against second tier Euro teams. That said, his shooting touch was great in the exhibition games. Let’s hope it translates when facing NBA players, and he stays healthy.

He has lots of talent and potential. See how he does in the pros. He has Mutombo ceiling right now.

Victor Wembanyama is in a class of his own. Any comparisons are lame. Wemba plays nothing like the bigs you guys are bringing up: Porzingus, Mutombo, Kareem.

Just ridiculous.

Wemba moves around the perimeter, handles for days, and can make any shot from anywhere. He floats around like a small forward. And he plays great defense.

His handlers gotta get Victor to strengthen his legs and his base. That's the main concern: his ankles and knees. He also needs to get deep tissue back massages and back adjustments (chiropractor) daily.

bisme37, I think you’re doing a fine job of moderating this discussion FWIW.

Clarity and straight facts about Victor W.

https://www.thefocus.news/sports/nba/victor-wembanyamas-parents-height-and-ethnicity-ahead-of-the-2023-nba-draft/

His Dad’s Congolese, 6’5” and a former triple jumper. His Mom is French, and a 6’2” early youth basketball coach.

Nurturing home life with athletic, accomplished parents.

Older sister and a younger brother but several years between so not as likely rivalry but rather supportive relationships.

Mentions knowing how to run…important.

THIS IDEA IS JUST PURE SPECULATION;

1. He is a generational pick but he’s only 18 years old.
2. In addition to the grind of a job; life in the fast lane starts next draft (June 2023)
3. Tim Duncan turned pro after several NCAA seasons as did Rasheed Wallace. Lebron, KG and Dwight Howard went straight pro. Anthony Davis had one NCAA year and Kentucky won it all. He’s now got an NBA ring as well. Pre NIl.
4. Hypothetically speaking, culd a $15 Mil+ endorsement deal ALLOW HIM Victor to CHOOSE TO HAVE A FUN/ maturation YEAR of college NCAA play? Name image Likeness is why I propose the IDEA.

Just last sentence was speculation.

Do not offer snarky remarks please if you’re befuddled. Thanks

They are wrong in the article, his young bro Oscar is actually playig bball, he played vs Bronny James this last summer for the French Comcast Team. But he's 15, just signed for TP's club ASVEL, 6'3 ... not the same measurements

Really impressive off-ball game, quickness, playmaking, but he needs to grow a little. Fortunately he's only 18 so he's still got time.

What kind of competition do you think draft prospects are playing against where you're using this level of competition as something to hold against Wembanyama?

He's playing 18 mpg.

Any ability to project how his body holds up in the NBA is just not going to be possible before the draft.

He is not playing in the Euroleague this year.

Victor is gonna have an injury riddled career. One look at his frail body says so.

I don’t get that from him when I seen him he is built more like a 18 year old Kareem he looks a little skinner but not much and he also is a few inches taller. He’s very nimble and light on his feet unlike the other 7’ plus tall players in the past with injuries. Does he need to get stronger sure he does just like any 18yr old.

I think the injury thing has become wildly overstated. There have been almost zero players built like Victor so we have almost zero data on how injury prone this type of body is. Maybe he ends up injury prone (happens to all kinds of players regardless of body type), but I think it's overly simplistic thinking to look at skinny guys and assume they're injury prone. There isn't data behind that. The large and heavy body type has been more prone to injury, but even that is based on limited data.

We can revisit this in 5 years. I'm betting he has a major injury

Even if he has a major injury tomorrow (knock on wood) he still probably goes #1.

But, there was this article or interview can't remember which was describing that he has world class support, and everything they do is aimed towards the prevention of injuries, they're teaching him how to land, how to take a fall, long sessions if stretching before and after exercise, how to maintain his posture etc. Plus they say he has intentionally not lifted a weight in his life yet, which I thought is bizarre and no idea what it's supposed to achieve but there you go.

If Victor has an ACL tear then unfortunately he's not going number one. Scoot would be number one if that happened.

I'd take LeBron any day of the week.
At that size and frame, durability will always be a concern with Wembanyama.

Same. Watching Lebron play at 17 and you knew immediately that he was going to be special. You could actually see him dominating the NBA as soon as he he stepped foot on the court. I got the same feeling watching VW against Ignite but the injury concern is there.
