Who Would You Rather Have: Alperen Sengun or Chet Holmgren?

I see a lot of posters saying Sengun is younger. Come on guys, the difference is less than 3 months. Chet is something like 10 and a half weeks older. There are so many valid arguments, drop the age thing.

The great thing is at least we get to see Rd 1 of these guys facing up tonite. Will be a great test for both of them and good eye test to gauge who is better as well.

One poster brought up a great point, Alpy is a #1 option while Chet isn't so the matchup may be a little skewed.

We'll see.

Sengun is a first option with franchise player talent. He is also the same age as Chet (slightly younger).

Chet could have the same talent, but I think his ceiling is a bit lower. Chet is playing as the 2nd/3rd option while Sengun is the #1 focus of the opposing team. This makes a big deal for young players who has not made a leap when this adjustment occurs.

This is also Sengun's 3rd year in the league. I like them both but I would bet that Chet improves more than Sengun improves over the next 2 years when Chet hits his 3rd year in the league. Either way, they're both going to be great if they can stay healthy... which obviously is more of a concern with Chet.

Both are pretty darn good.

Personally, I would take Chet. A big that can protect the rim at basically an elite level, not to mention doing it as a rookie AND high percentage free throw/three point shooter is a very, very rare commodity.

Offensively, Sengun as a playmaker has a significant edge over Chet, but scoring-wise, Sengun is averaging 2 more points per 36 but significantly worse efficiency.. Chet: 65% TS to Sengun: 59% TS.

Rebounding-wise, Per 36, Sengun is averaging .5 more rebounds than Chet...negligible imo

So do I take the significantly better passer or do I take the significantly better rim protector, shooter, and more efficient player?
Volume scoring and rebounding wise, Sengun has a very slight advantage if any.

Based on the criteria I would want my big man to have, I would choose Chet.

Better at what? Definitely not defense. And offensively it’s a toss up at worst. All Sengun is better at is posting up/ball handling imo

Chet is easily more efficient as a scorer and is a much better 3 point shooter as well.

Sengun's raw scoring numbers, rebounding, and free throw rate are all essentially negligible compared to what Chet brings. Sengun is only two points and .1 more FTA per 36 with higher usage than Chet. Sengun averages .5 rebounds more than Chet per 36.

Add to the fact that Chet is in his first year...The only real notable thing Chet is worse than Sengun is playmaking, whereas Chet has the clear advantage in rim protection, overall efficiency, and both significantly higher FT% and 3pt% while being a higher volume 3pt shooter.

Not saying it is wrong to take Sengun but it should be extremely obvious the clear differences between Chet and Duren.

a single h2h game is meaningless compared to the 70+ other games they will play, or the 19-20 games they have already played. 'a good eye test'. lol.

These two guys are 21 and both play for young teams in the Western Conference.

They realistically could be seeing one another in the PO's for yrs to come so why would this not be a good eye test and gauge for them?

i don't think there's any circumstance where one head to head matchup is meaningful relative to an entire season's body of work. it's only useful for hot takes.

I think guys, well at least the competitive ones who want to be great look at their contemporaries and want to make a statement to said opponent that "hey you may be good or getting the hype but I'm better than you" from the very 1st matchup.

I think Chet had that in mind vs Wemby and I think Chet will go at Alpy because Alpy is definitely going at him. That guy went at Joker with no problem.

Isn’t Chet the better defensive player?

Yes. And Sengun is the better scorer, rebounder and playmaker/passer.

65% TS vs 59% in favor of Chet who is a rookie, add in great defensive instincts and length. I wish we drafted Sengun also but I have to go with Chets fit and ceiling.
