This is a guy who is at worst top 8 in the league thinking he has a chance against anyone he faces. If you don't have that mentality at that stage then you might as well hang them up.

As a pro athlete who's the best player on the best team, why wouldn't you think this?

Confidence goes a long way.

I remember Paul Pierce had said the same thing or something similar when he was on the Celtics, and people got up in an uproar about it. I actually understood where he was coming from.

You can have confidence, and then you can think you're the best player in the world. The two are not the same.

Two ways you get there:

1, you win MVP, 2 you win a chip. Tatum has none of those, and he's on the most stacked team in the league, so no I don't think it's a given that he's the best player in the league because he's on the best team in the league.

Lol at the reactions on here. I seem to remember Embiid say stuff like he deserved MVP, and all ya'll called that cringe, and believed he shouldn't win it because of that. But someone can say they are the best player in the league?

LMAO this is like LeBron anointing himself the best player of all time in an interview with his homies. . You don't say that about yourself, you let others say that about you. That's the whole point. There is being self confident and then theres being insane. Tatum has done nothing in this league to deserve that rep.

He obviously isn’t, and of course he knows that.

That said, these are hyper competitive athletes who have always been the best player on any team they’ve been on in their life. Their confidence in their abilities got them this far, what else are they going to say?

I want him to say I need to get better. I need to win a chip, and I need to win an MVP. I need to be consistent in the playoffs, which comes in spurts. I need to improve my game, where its not so one dimensional.

When he says he's the best player in the world, it comes off as, oh that stuff doesn't matter, or I've accomplished a lot.

He has good playoff success, but I've not seen him take his game to another level in the playoffs like many on the list I shared do.

Yes, he isn't better than any of these guys. You can add a few more if you want to.
That's not the point though.
We want to win the championship. The leader of the team must have a winning mentality. Confidence. Leadership skills.
So, i want him to have this mindset.
He didn't downgrade anyone, he just spoke for himself.
I see no disrespect towards anyone.

I’m pretty sure no one hated on Embiid for saying he deserved to win mvp. In fact he actually alsosaid he believed he was the best in the world just this year but the fact that you didn’t know or remember speaks to what a little deal it is. And there shouldn’t be any restrictions to it. Just admit because a “Celtic” player said it you’re annoyed. Because Ant, Morant, Butler, and AD have all said exactly the same thing recently yet you’ve never made a thread for them.

Then you're player isn't winning a chip. He's showing he's the best player in the league. The NBA yearns for an American superstar who is up there with the greats, and he's not. He's a rung below and its clear as day.
