I don't think this is all that meaningful on its own. Giannis' WHOLE family moved to Athens, all his brothers and their kids etc, plus Giannis' kids are just starting to be school aged so this is a good time to move to your more permanent destination. Plus many many NBA players don't raise families in the city that drafted them, so I'm really not sure this indicates anything other than Giannis wants to be with his family in Greece long term.

Yeah, my first thought was that folks really don't know nothing about Salamis and the Persians and the Pelopennesian Wars? Athens is inland and the closest harbor, the Piraeus, is miles away, they had wooden walls that ran the whole road from city to port.

For real, Greece is beautiful. I don't think anyone would say its cities are super posh but it's probably a nice place to live if you got $$$.

It's realgm, man. For the next 1.5 years Knicks fans will be insisting that Giannis only wants to come to them and they don't have to give up anything real, and if the Bucks want nothing at all for him, fine. They'll ignore that scenarios like that almost never happen (and that getting cap space to sign Giannis would gut the team as much as a decent trade). Meanwhile Bucks fans will insist they have full control over the situation and it will take the complete superstar trade haul to get them to even pick up the phone. They'll ignore the scenarios where older stars who wanted out and had contracts running down didn't net great trade returns or at least definitely had their value driven down some.

To my mind there is no direct trade between these two teams that makes any sense.

The Knicks don't have picks or sufficent "future" assets.

A three or four team trade in which the Knicks give up win-now pieces to teams willing to give up picks makes more sense.

Still hard to imagine, and the Bucks won't do it unless Giannis demands it. Which by all accounts he has not done.

Even if the Bucks took back a player like OG I think they'd look to deal him for picks. OG is valuable to a contending team but isn't going to lift the floor much for a bad team.

And yes, the Bridges trade looms as a mistake now. The Knicks were impatient and are now in a weaker position to make a move than they otherwise would have been.

Things will go as follows:

1. If Milwaukee is top3 in the East by February, the season will finish with Giannis on the Bucks.

2. If the season ends with Milwaukee making the Finals, Giannis will sign extension.


If (1) doesn't happen, it's 50-50 for February.
If (1) does happen but (2) doesn't, i think it's a certainty now that Giannis will be traded next summer.

This is a make or break season for the Bucks.
They must make the Finals. Even a conference finals appearance, won't be enough.

Giannis is at the peak of his powers. 30 years of age going for 31.
Sending his family outside of Milwaukee means that he has no real bonds anymore to the city and motives to stay around.
If he wants to keep playing in the US without his family around(we'll see how much this will affect him since he has never done it), he can do it anywhere he wishes without worrying about the kids. That makes NY a strong candidate.

I find it difficult (impossible actually) to believe that Shams is getting all this out of nowhere.
There's definitely smoke because Giannis could have put all this discussion to bed with a single statement. He hasn't.

Giannis is one of the few players you actually trade 5+ firsts and a great player for. Bridges is not.

Shams is a confirmed hack so take his speculative nonsense with a grain of salt. NYC I am sure is an attraction but the Knicks have no way of acquiring Giannis and are fringe contenders at best, the Bucks aren’t giving Giannis away so if that’s the only other team he has an interest in then it’s a good sign because they’re not signing him as a FA or have the assets for a trade.

People thinking Giannis was going to request a trade to OKC, Cleveland, or San Antonio were off their rockers. Unless you think Giannis is signing with Panathinaikos I don’t think you can read much into his family resettling in Athens.
