Context. You have to separate half-court and transition, as well as half-court plays and ORB putbacks. The average half-court play was only worth 0.978 ppp in 2024-25. It was 0.889 ppp in 2007-08; PHX was #1 with 0.987 ppp. So, Kobe's post-up plays (which are largely self-created) were comfortably more efficient than an average half-court play from the best offense in the NBA.
FYI Prime Shaq was 0.97 ppp in the post per Dipper 13's tracking.
And he still could have used the attention he drew to do things like push the pace creating more transition opportunities, drive to the hoop, setup teammates near the rim, or kick it out to 3pt shooters which would have generated a much more efficient ppp compared to taking tough contested shots.
