Unsure if someone's linked to this article yet, but it's been the most informative thing I've read so far.

https://medium.com/@tomaspueyo/coronavirus-the-hammer-and-the-dance-be9337092b56

It's a bit long, but not too scientific term-y. Really put the entire event in perspective for me. Hopefully, the US starts doing what's suggested here quickly, as time is the biggest commodity right now.

Well FL peeps, wouldn't be surprised if by the end of the weekend this was official.

FL is going to be an absolute disaster. Super at risk population and they did not take it seriously.

I'm pretty happy I live in NC. Our governor acted pretty early (although we still aren't shut down enough) and our positive rate has been pretty low so far.
I told my boss today that NY and CA have been put in lock down and eventually that will find its way to Florida. He is a boomer in denial.

The issue is the employees that would lose their income. They'd go on unemployment which would put a further strain on the government when they're (or should be) scrambling to keep the economy afloat.

I'm not saying I agree with the way they've acted, almost holding their employees as a ransom, but the threat is real and significant.

As of March 17th, 2020:

"Between 36 million and 51 million people have been stricken with the flu as of March 7, according to the latest CDC data."

"According to CDC, this year's flu season has led to at least 17 million medical visits and 370,000 hospitalizations. CDC found that the percentage of outpatient visits for influenza-like illness increased to 5.2% in the week ending on March 7, up from 5.1% the previous week. The national baseline for those visits is 2.4%.

CDC estimated that there have been at least 22,000 deaths related to the flu so far this season."

So I'm not sure why you're insinuiting that the flu is not serious.

The federal government can just print money and pay unemployment (via the states likely)

.........Wow.

Stop and think about this for one second, what do you think may be causing that sudden rise in "flu like illnesses" in the week of March 7.

I mean really, just stop and think about it.....

My bro, have you thought that it might just be the flu, bro?

This here is an interesting image:

Look at that almost perfectly flat line from China.

Japan's a bit suspect, too, and on Japanese twitter there is a lot of wondering about whether the numbers are real, or if Abe is just chasing his Olympics.

I know they CAN do a lot of things. But the threat of laying off employees wouldn't put a financial strain on the Fed Gov't...not that they really have financial strains...but a bailout is money they obviously pay out...and would then likely have to do it for multiple or all airlines.

Your numbers are rather alarming.

This means that the virus has a longer life span and has been circulating world wide before January. This virus has already been here for months but not reported as such.

I've posted this dozens of times. CDC tracks ILI (Influenza LIKE illness). It groups pneumonia deaths. Almost nobody dies straight up from the flu. This is a completely different animal. Rather than flu weakening you to pneumonia, this actually CAUSES viral pneumonia. Key distinction.

Maybe think of it in basketball terms.

The opponent is Covid-19. The team is humanity (all countries, the virus does not discriminate between us)

Maybe you think USA is the best player on the team. Fine. Evidence of the past few months shows that may not be the case, but fine.

USA is having a chance to step up, to get us ahead. It's not looking like that's working. In the past, USA has been the best player, and often had a "team first" attitude despite being the best player. Not a selfish, me first, attitude. That's part of what has made the USA the best player in the past.

Instead of playing blame games a la LeBron to JR Smith, and going into overtime arguing and blaming. We're asking LeBron to stop thinking about what is already done, and look forward to what he he CAN control. How putting the team first can win the game, for all players involved. He needs to do this by leading by example, playing FOR HIS TEAM, not for himself. And the others will follow. Its setting an example. It's working together. And as the dynasties of the NBA have shown us all of our lives, you can get so much more done, so much more accomplished, working as a TEAM, than you can putting the individual first. The dynasties have always been about team, with players playing for each other. Not a one man show, no matter how much superstars are promoted here. We all know the best teams hit you from all angles, if one guy is off, the next guy steps up. There are X-factors, 6th men, great coaching, somebody gets hot. It can be led by the superstar, but without buy in from the whole team that superstar accomplishes nothing on his own. At least not a championship. You might "get yours", and make stats look good for you, in your favor. But the TEAM, in this case happens to be humanity, loses with that mindset. Cavs lost that game and that series. Not because of LeBron, but another mentality might have worked better in that circumstance. Instead of blaming and pointing. A team first, lets move forward and focus on our goals attitude might have gotten the job done. The other option is we can all separate, and lose, but at least have somebody to "blame". All the talent in the world, wasted.

Image

Nice potentially game-saving rebound by JR Smith btw.
