I would guess Nico hyped the cost of Luka's supermax while totally downplaying the lost value of destroying an entire franchise

These billionaires are pennywise and pound foolish when it comes to married money

Cost of supermax, while his replacement is making more money for first 3.5 years.

But it's true he saved a lot of money for Lakers.

In reality, Adam Silver will take care of him for saving the Lakers franchise. They couldn't guarantee him job security but I'm sure he'll be taken care of somehow.

He'll be sitting beside Isaiah Thomas at the NBA TV desk.

Why do they fire him AFTER he destroyed the team? Wouldn't it make more sense to do it before he did that?

What if this was all a Machiavellian power play by Kidd to get the dual GM role?

Makes you think.

Because clueless owner believed him. Dumont was even publicly explaining how Luka doesn't have work ethics and lifestyle of Kobe, Bird and Shaq.

Now he sees there will be no championship games in near future and he fires him.

How long until we hear ‘SELL THE MAVERICKS!’ chants break out now that Nico is gone? I’d be shocked if we don’t start hearing them immediately. Dumont is going to learn that firing Nico isn’t enough.

The owners were on board with the trade.

Well turns out, unsurprisingly, trading for a 32 year old big man that is always injured making 174 million overall the next 3 years for a generational talent was not best idea so someone had to be sacrificed.

Grimes this season

17.3 PPG 4.3 RPG 4.4 APG 0.9 SPG
48.0% FG
40.6% 3PT
82.4% FT
59.2% EFG
64.4% TS

Nico really earned that pink slip

AD was playing like an MVP caliber player when they traded him. I'm still hoping he can come back and lead the Mavs. Otherwise that was some crazy lucky timing by the Lakers if he just falls apart and never returns to form.

The ironic thing is, AGAIN, that Dumont was the one who ordered the trade of Luka. No GM has that much power to trade a young superstar on his own. I'm actually curious if Mavs fans will start using their brains and chanting "Sell the team" because THAT should have been the original chant to begin with

Have the fans who were banned for chanting ‘Fire Nico’ been reinstated?

Would have been too obvious. It's all just part of the bigger plan. Enough time has now passed. His job is now done and he needs to moved so people would simply forget about the whole trade.

It doesn't looks so bad when you compare the stats to the player they traded Grimes for, Caleb Martin this season:

1.6 PPG 1.4 RPG 0.7 APG 0.4 SPG
31.3% FG
20.0% 3PT
75.0% FT
34.4% EFG
39.4% TS

Oh yeah and Dallas threw in a second round pick too

Exactly.

And even if a GM does have the power to trade a young superstar on their own, that just means ownership is doing a terrible job managing the organization.

Which goes back to my original point: if I were a Mavs fan, I’d already be mad — but the timing of this would make me even more concerned. Optically, this just looks like incompetence.
