They should be spamming pick and rolls with him and using him for cuts as well. They're asking him to play like KD instead which is obviously just really inefficient offense. Coupled with the fact that they're playing a power forward at point guard, it's just ugly.

There definitely needs to be a balance between his personal development and playng winning basketball. You have to attempt to win to develop winning habits. You can't just have Wemby out there doing whatever he wants. They have to find that healthy balance where they can reign in some of the experimental stuff.
They don't want to win, Pop is clear by the way he plays terrible bench players leading vs Miamis starters in middle of 4th q by 7-8 points. They led because Wemby is of to very good 4th quarter, easy post scoring. They bench him, Vassell for like 5 minutes, lose the lead by the lesser players shooting hero ball 3s even when Wemby, Vassell is back in late in 4th.

If you are playing for picks let your great rookie learn by getting the ball more often. 5 losses in a row, they led by 19,20 in 2 of those 5 games. What balance? Winning ball ? Losing because K.Johnson, Branham contested 3s doesn't teach anything but losing or making Wemby look like he was drafted by Hornets...

I conclude KD is not good offensively

KD has a history of games to show how good he is. You seem to be missing the point I'm making.

But here's an olive branch, Wemby is going to be up against better defensive Cs the next 5 games.

If he can average equal stats to what he has these last 5 games then I will consider him to outperform expectations.

I'm expecting him to be scoring 16ppg at 55% TS the next 5 games on average.

Update:

Wemby first 5 games: 28.6mpg, 20.6ppg, 58.9% TS
Wemby last 5 games: 31.7mpg, 18.8ppg, 49.9% TS

So I predicted against tougher bigs defense that he would do 16ppg at 55% TS
He did worse, 49.9% TS. Yet he tried to shoot more.
So not afraid of the challenge but certainly his offense is impacted by better big defenders.

Next 5 games are a mix bag of bigs defenders. He should do better than these last 5 games but worse than the first 5 games.
Prediction average: 20ppg, 55% TS

More than a quarter of his total FGAs are from 10+ feet, right? So yeah, he's taking tons of jumpers, even if you filter out the 3s.

The lack of a real PG hurts him a lot. Pop and the Spurs aren’t doing him any favors so far.

Like I pointed out in the Shaq/VW thread, Shaq had prime Scott Skiles as a rookie. What would VW’s number look like if he had that?

Distribution of shots would probably run more to lobs and cuts. Jumper looks shaky and in-progress but the foundation and confidence are there, do it'll be fine eventually.

Yeah it shouldn't be underestimated that the confidence and foundation are there.

It's conditioning to deal with the physicality of the game. He is going to make a year 3 leap IMO

Regardless if he's not meeting the hype, it's still one of the best rookie seasons in recente memory.

Also, respective teams are in different stages of development. So yeah contexts matter.

Honestly, I think he'll look materially better in year 2. The tools are there. The motor is there. The defensive impact is already there despite being so new to the NBA. And yeah, the foundation on the shot is there. He takes a lot of 3s. That's specifically undercutting things for him. He's shooting 52.9% inside the arc to begin with. And if he maintains his present percentage, he'll be one of 8 player-seasons at 7% BLK since 04-05.... four of which came from Marcus Camby from 05-08. That's pretty wild.

Wemby needs less unassisted 3s. More clean looks, and especially more from the corner and fewer from above the break. That is savaging his 3P%. He's also shooting quite well from 10 feet and in. Lots to work with there.

We're very much seeing that he could already be better if he was deployed with more intent, but Pops is specifically not caring or making an emphasis of getting him the ball in his ideal places for whatever reason at the moment.

This kid is going to be very good if he stays healthy. And I hope he does, because he is fun to watch.

On what basis? he is well below NBA average in efficiency.

I don't think that his rookie season has been particularly impressive so far. We are only about 10 games in though

Probably from his intriguing potential and defensive impact.

Everyone knows that Wemby has insane potential, but he's not playing winning basketball right now unlike some other recent rookies

Yeah but that isn't a sensible evaluation of a rookie season because it has so little to do with the rookie himself.

Potential doesn't matter when assessing how good of a rookie season he is having.

Right, but winning is dependent upon total team resources. And like I've said a few times, his scoring efficiency isn't far different from the sub-50% TS seasons we saw from rookie Lebron or KD. His impact is being felt, including statistically, but San Antonio is just that bad, and Pops is doing stuff which is working at odds with a win-now ideal.

Sounds like Pop has gone soft with age, unfortunately, though it does make sense considering we are in the superstar-empowerment era. Pretty sure Spurs front-office will do anything to cater to Wemby so they don't have another Kawhi situation in their hands.

Just think about it. We've just never seen someone like Wemby before and we dont know what kind of player he will end up being, Pop doesnt know, even Wemby doesnt know. He often says he want to be able to do everything but we all know it's not possible, or if it ever is, it'll take a lot of time. Why would they start molding him when they dont even know what they want to mold him into. It's frustrating to watch but it makes a lot of sense.
