We don't yet know what happened, but I can't help but feel some anger right now because, unless it was suddenly mechanical, it was avoidable. I wish there were rules in place forbidding pilots from flying in such conditions. Certainly if LAPD grounded its helicopters it was pause for thought. I think at this point I just want something specific to lay the hurt on rather than it just spilling out all over the place as if that would maybe help for any of this to make more sense.

Anyway, here's an interesting thread:

honestly can't think of another athlete's death today that would've caused worldwide impact like Kobe's had, like maybe Cristiano god forbid but that's about it...that's how big this guy is man

Kobe’s enormous wealth had nothing to do with how much money he made. What a tone deff comment.

His wealth is directly related to how much money he made. That’s literally how you build wealth.

He was defining 'wealth' in terms of his children, I'm guessing, and other less materially valued things.

Eh? There are quite a few athletes bigger than Kobe in terms of worldwide popularity.

Tiger, Federer, Messi, Ronaldo, LeBron, Bolt, etc

It still hurts. I’m 32 and never ever feel anything more than “oh **** poor guy/girl” when someone famous passed, but this one has hit me.

He was my superhero growing up, the reason I’ve spent so many nights watching NBA since I was like 13-14, the reason I follow the Lakers, the reason I’ve learned another language just watching games, reading webpages and writing here. Every time I saw him on the sidelines greeting players with his daughter, it simply felt right. He was supposed to be there forever giving them advice.

How can it be possible that a rich guy dying on the other side of the world, someone I’ve never met or talked to can affect me this way?

You must have done something right Mr Bryant to touch so many peoples lives playing a game. You were no ordinary person, the world is a worse place without you.

Then it makes no sense. The poster was clearly referring to his monetary wealth - ie he could afford to use a helicopter to get around.

Check out Lil Wayne’s “Kobe Bryant” if you’re unfamiliar with the track. Real nostalgic. The beat is a 6 and the lyrics are a 7 but it’s still a cool snapshot in time to how popular he was while chasing a title without Shaq.

I think one of the clearest things that should come of this tragedy is a new flight rule that if the freaking POLICE are not comfortable with flight conditions, all other helicopters are grounded.

In such a rule heavy state, the idea that the above isn't already a thing is nuts.

it really show's you life isn't promised and to make everyday count. such a tough loss for all of the families involved and fans across the world. i wouldn't take shots at the pilot though. we don't know how experienced he was or wasn't. it is just a terrible tragedy

That aspect, the frailty of life in modern times, is one of the things that hits all of us, fan or not. Then the losing of kids and family members in a blink of an eye also hits home. Could happen to any of us and there are poster(s) on this board who will or who have died in some transport accident, could be me, could be you, we can't predict our fates, but these things are always sobering. Beyond Kobe's fame, it's 9 people and multiple children and both parents in one case with at least one orphan left behind. It would be gutchurning if they were all unknown when you hear a number like nine. I recall a limo accident maybe in NY or back East within the last couple years where 20 youngfolk on their way to a wedding died at a particularly dangerous spot. This reminds me of that, the whole list of victims were 20 somethings. Sucks in that case and in this case how much future life was lost. Thanks to all the fans who've been respectful and treated the victims with dignity. It's been 99% positive no matter affiliation. It may go unsaid before the shock wears off, but I can assure you that we Laker fans all appreciate that, peeps.

Kobe was the biggest star in LA. he didn’t even care for stardom. He was an icon. I can’t believe he’s gone from the physical world. I don’t know if la will get another star like him ever.
