Interesting, Ben Falk, who created the site, Cleaning the Glass, wrote a piece today about that after he decided to start analyzing things related to the pandemic.

This will look like nothing in two weeks, or even a week. Like a fraction.

I hope that the good that comes is we NEVER again allow ourselves to be this vulnerable. Or this dependent on other nations for our manufacturing. They gotta be well stocked and be able to fully produce our own goods when **** hits the fan.

I ordered some masks....but my first batch gets here sometime in April and the second batch sometime in May. How long can you wear these masks? I know the longer you wear them, the less effective they are, but they are still far more effective than not wearing one.
Got a lot of disposable gloves too. I don't know if I will really need or use this stuff a lot, but I'd hate to decide later I really need it since it takes so long to get some of this stuff.

Amazing interview. The guy behind the science in Contagion! America stepped up in a lot of ways after WWII as he implies at end of article. I wonder if long term this may benefit us? Helping us as a country get back on the same page a little more. I feel like we've all taken a lot for granted and stopped taking care of each other. Maybe it needs to all come crashing down to rebuild better than before?LKN wrote:This is a really good interview that is worth reading. Not the N95 ones the medical professionals wear, so I'm not contributing to any shortage for them.
I just got 10 of these https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32955288596.html?spm=a2g0s.12269583.0.0.6c131af7VuOW9w
and 10 of these (they look the same but don't say surgical) https://www.amazon.com/Breathable-Thick-3-Layer-Masks-500Pcs/dp/B085LK7RW5/ref=sr_1_6?dchild=1&keywords=surgical%2Bmasks%2Bdisposable&qid=1584769663&s=beauty&sr=1-6
For gloves I got these, but wow, they were only like $14 for 100 when I got them...looks like they more than doubled. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GS8W3T4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1

Does anyone else read the thread, click on a link or two, go down a rabbit hole or two, go back to thread, repeat cycle, and then you realize hours have gone by? I keep thinking "I'll just catch up on the thread and watch a few shows" and then it's like 1 am next thing I know it.

Saw on a video today that not a single infected person younger than 19 has died more than 90% of the victims are 50+
Also it seems like your only chance of dying is if u hit critical levels of illness which is an organ failure or worse. Not a single person has died from mild or severe cases

Those are strictly one-day use only. Remember those all too well during the HK SARS crisis. We were told to dispose of them every few hours, but we had lots of masks at the time. They used to get so smelly after only a few hours, which you will soon find out. Still maintain social distancing as they protect others from you (to some degree), as opposed to you being protected from others.

In a medical environment, those masks are basically single use items. See a patient, then dispose and replace before next patient.
In a workplace, they may be used for a full day by someone sewing or soldering or glueing, etc... though that really pushes it. They get contaminated and gunked up from the inside and get less effective as they do, because you end up sucking more air from around the outsides.
For an individual concerned with COVID spread, I would say you could get 6-8 total hours of use, broken down to a bunch of smaller chunks of time. For example, if you're going shopping for food, you don't need to wear it from the moment you leave home, in the car, etc... You put it on only for the time when you are going to be in close proximity to other people.
The important thing is to touch it as little as possible and if you're going to re-use it like that you have to remove your gloves first and use clean hands to remove the mask - by the elastics - and not touch the surfaces while putting it into a resealable bag. Always attend to your hands before moving to the mask.

Yeah, I knew they were one day. I figured I would probably on wear if things got dire when I go to grocery store or something and take it off when I come out. So if I only wore it for a half hour, I didn't know if I could wear it a few more times and be ok. I currently have extremely limited contact with anyone..working from home 95% (and go into office when no one else is there) and just go to get groceries...it's just me and my dog here.

You must also consciously remind yourself to not touch the mask to reduce bacterial contamination. I always found them irritating around the nose and wanted to scratch but you just got to remind yourself not to.

Yeah, I just mentioned, but that was my plan. I already read all the instructions about not touching, etc. But I would only where for like half hour chunks when I go to the grocery store or if I had to go into somewhere crowded...I guess that would only likely be for medical reasons.

Yeah, that might be tough. But it seems when I go into a grocery store I kind of get my alert up about what I touch. I'm sure I will mess up and actually scratch my nose or something once. I imagine it is still better to do that while in a grocery store than to scratch your nose or touch face in grocery store without a mask or glove though. But for mask preservation purposes, I have to remember that.

Another problem with those white and blue surgical masks is that they aren't marked for jnside or outside. You see a lot of blue facing out in photos and around, but often times the blue is supposed to be on the inside. The smoother filter side goes out and the fuzzier paper-towel feeling side goes against your face, so that it traps what you're exhaling. Those are more for protecting others from the wearer than vice versa, but more than one study shows that they are fairly effective at flu virus protection also, when worn properly.
The chubbier your face and chin are, the better the seal it will make around the outside
