In the Balkans it's "košarka" and "koš" means "basket" in English, so it's kinda similar to "basketball".

Anyways, we beat Italy tonight. We fooled around up until 4-5 minutes left in the third quarter, then Jokic decided to play some ball and did stuff like this:

No Italian player could contain him and they kept fouling, so ex-fatso scored a handful of FTs, had some nice dishes and dropped an important triple. Overall, it was an entertaining game.

How did the sport get branded for the entire continent as "basket" or Eurobasket?

Is that what the French call it?

Lithuanians also have very stupid word for basketball, Lithuanians in general try to ''lithuanize'' everything, a lot of people push back against it, we had so many stupid words for items and things that just either have international term or just accepted English term. In general, Lithuanian language, unlike Italian or English has very complex declension system, you really need to at least add lithuanian endings to basically every word, otherwise it would just not make sense. So, in Lithuania, LeBron James becomes LeBronas Jamesas etc. and that LeBronas Jamesas would have another 10 alternatives depending on the declension used.

In Lithuania, we call basketball - Krepšinis. Which is incredibly stupid when you think about, is that classic example of our linguists being annoying, but unlike some other words that get national push against, word ''krepšinis'' in Lithuania seem to be so old and rooted in our very culture, that no one really seem to even realize how kinda stupid it is, in Latvia, Germany, Russia, it is Basketball (basketbol, баскетбол, same thing), but only Lithuania, Italy, Spain, Estonia and Serbs seem to call basketball differently.

there is nothing weird going on in spanish.

basket cesto
ball balon

baloncesto.

plain and simple.

we used to call football balonpie

same mechanichs and its a shame now `people only talk about futbol.

Actually about half of languages use terms that are not variations of basketball https://www.indifferentlanguages.com/words/basketball#region-1

Same in Lithuanian, krepšys = basket. Original form from 1920 was krepšiasvydis (basket-throw)

I think this goes without saying.

That is because for a usa player winning gold medals is almost more of a mininum threshold to pass

Like i am sure they love to win those gold medals dont get me wrong, but is almost more of a bad thingh to lose them than somethingh they get praised for winning (props to the american stars who take that high risk/low reward bet every olympics)

Because usa is the eternal favorite an American player will never be remembered for his usa team success. It will be just a cherry on top

For a non american it IS the thingh they can build a legacy as much as winning rings in nba, manu gold medal will always be as much or more of his legacy than the titles with san antonio, same with pau gasol european/fiba success

If anythingh i actuallt low key think it will be a cool thingh for american basketball long term if they start losing the olympics once in a while so it becomes much more prestigious for the players to go and win those tournaments.

It could make basketball for americans what hockey for canada, or boxing for mexico. A sport where you hold national pride over and getting american public more invested in international national team basketball

For American, hard part is not to win gold, its to make the team. Euroleague legend Marcus Brown once said he dreams of making team USA more than making the NBA.

Greece or "Graecia" as the Latins/Romans came to call the ancient Greeks who settled in Southern Italy ('Magna Grecia') came from "Greco" the son of Zeus and Pandora. "Hellas" or "Hellenes" reference first came from Homer, describing the people from an area in Central Greece who were "companions of Achilles." Hellas then steadily became the name of the Southern Balkan region that ancient Greeks identified as being the land of the "Hellenes," notably during the Greek/Persian wars.

Other people: our name comes from "rain"

Yeah... Greek, German, Slavic languages have declension too, probably many more languages around the world. My name is Spyros but when you talk to me it's Spyro, when you say something belongs to me it's Spyrou, and so on. Try to explain that to an Australian LOL

Kostas Ante starting to look like an NBA player consistently this summer.
A couple of years later than everyone expected, but better late than never. I reckon he'll be back in the League soon.

In Bulgarian - кош = basket, but we still call it баскетбол = basketball. Football is футбол, Volleyball is волейбол, etc.

Second most popular serious theory says that Lietuva derived from "leičiai" which was class of people that implemented ruler's authority, roughly "companions of Duke"

Top theory says it's from small river Lietava (roughly "river that often spills over") near first known capital, which I guess is less romantic than "Rainland"

Yeah, sorry about that, if I could go back in time, I definitely take Montenegro out and add Germany. Germany now is one of the most talented teams around, but when I was just thinking basketball nations on a spot, I didn't think of Germany, it is still not very synonymous with basketball, at least it was that way in my mind at that moment.

Watching Giannis and Domantas SAbonis play under different coaches, reminded me how much coaching is important in Euro ball. We were a bit too hastle to write those guys off as FIBA chockers and disappointments maybe, but actual tournament yet to be played...

Some recent results :

Greece 89-80 Turkey (I believe Ataman was ejected haha)
Germany 101-90 Czech Republic
Italy 86-90 Serbia
Lithuania 78-76 Spain
Turkey 86-87 Poland (hm....?)
Finland 97-94 Ukraine

All results here : https://www.fiba.basketball/eurobasket/2022/news/tracker-preparation-games-for-fiba-eurobasket-2022

I'm not so sure about that. Like at all. I guess it will depend on each player. And it certainly matters where you ask them that question.

I think it is definitely the case in countries with strong domestic basketball tradition. Thinking Yugos, Greece, Lithuania. In a countries like Germany or Italy though, where NBA is probably more popular than domestic basketball, the answer is different, but I still think a lot of kids grow up idolizing national teams far more than lets say Americans do. NBA is still just a foreign league, I know that to most kids it is still the thing with all the stars from these video games, and everyone wants to be a part of it, but it is still foreign to a degree. To win a medal with your NT, is not just to win something for yourself and your teammates, it is winning something for your nation and making your nation famous. Euros might dream to win NBA ring, but they arent dreaming to win a title for any NBA team, it is different in that sense.
