It's very even, without Wemby... probably Mobley/Zubac/Gobert at the top, with JJJ right behind... Perimeter, I think Caruso is the best defender in the league, but he doesn't qualify...

Damn shame Wemby's going to be robbed because of his unfortunate injury.

I saw this on Twitter.

Cade Cunningham has fears of one man in his sleep.

Giving DPOY to a guy who's team is on verge of top 10 worst defense is silly. It's like giving MVP to a guy who's team won 25 games.

Gobert, Zubac or Mobley. Impact of defensive big vs defensive guard/wing isn't same. Bigs impact defense way more than guards/wings can.

Besides, in 5 games without Daniels Hawks defensive rating was 112,1.
Their defensive rating with him is 116,9.

Almost every player with massive amount of steals gets those steals by gambling on passing lines. Iverson made career on steals and he was never good defender, he would just take unnecessary risk to step between passing lines. it would result in steal or massive defensive break.

The award is defensive PLAYER of the year. Not defensive team of the year.

Heh. You're asking people to think too much, my guy.

I dont know if Dyson should win it or not but it does seem odd to give it to a player on a team that's good defensively independent of them.

And, to the poster's other point, the concept that the Hawks are better defensively (per the metrics apparently) without Dyson simply illustrates the problem with defensive metrics in general.

i thought kawhi had more ridiculous "how did his arms reach that" steals than anyone i had ever seen, but daniels is just on another level. that early steal where he somehow knocks it away from tatum even as tatum perfectly uses his body to protect the ball should be impossible.

I know this is propaganda, but you can't use teamwide stats for this. The Thunder have an insanely loaded defensive supporting cast and Dort is not even a top 3 defender on that team

He is though.

He regularly shuts down his matchup. And he's mostly always guarding the most potent offensive player.

But yes it's also propaganda only slightly less shameful than Draymond doing his own.

And he's definitely a better choice than Dray.

What's the case for being better than Caruso, Chet, or Hartenstein on defense? My guess is that if they were eligible then Thunder fans would be pushing them instead of Dort

I can see Dort winning it in exactly the same way Smart won it.
Super impressive team defense voters feel a need to reward. No clear cut stand out amongst an armada of elite defenders. Dort (like Smart) has the rep and recognizability as a defensive player. The defensive anchor center (Time Lord and now Chet/iHart) don't have enough games played.

Honestly it's a really wide open race with Wemby out. Mobley and JJJ are solid choices, but neither has grabbed the award by the throat. Dyson is having an incredible defensive season on a bad defensive team. Amen is still a really fun choice. Draymond was right look at the landscape to throw his hat in the ring.

I kind of hope a lot of these guys get votes, rather than the voters coalescing into a lazy consensus. I feel a lot of awards should be that way this year (6MOY, ROY, MIP).

What happens if Zubac wins it? I think he's been the most consistent throughout the season (along with Gobert). If the award goes to the player who has the most impact on defense, it should be won by a center...

I think Zubac deserves serious consideration, which isn't something I was expecting.

I love watching him and he's a great individual defender, but there is just no indication that Dort has DPOY impact. He just doesn't have the defensive playmaking of actual DPOY-level players and that is consistently reflected in the individual and team defense numbers.

Doesn’t that beg the question of how valuable a player is, if he doesn’t help the team?

Zu isn’t getting enough praise. #2 or #3 defense (top 5 all year) despite no Kawhi much of the season. With how many guys are disqualified he should be getting way more talk here. His defense has been better than JJJ and Draymond IMO.

If Gobert continues the current pace until the end of the season (like he's been play the last 6 game, which avg 15.8 rebounds per game). Could he win another DPOY?

Mobley is a little quiet lately (or overlooked because Cavs are so good on offensive. Cavs also dropped a little), JJJ shouldn't win especially if MEM fall behind TWolves.
