Lebron for now, although people could convince me to switch up to Jordan or Kareem, if there's good enough arguments. I'm open-minded!

My top 10 as of now:

Lebron
Jordan
Kareem
Russell

Hakeem
Duncan
Shaq
Wilt
Curry
KG/Magic (stuck on this, I need help with this one)

HMs(the guys in contention for top 15):
Kobe
KD
Jokic
Oscar
CP3
West
Harden
Wade
Dirk

Pretty sure basketball fans have listened to enough of Magic over the years to know to never take his basketball opinions seriously.

This is a solid list, but leaving Emilio Estevez outside of your top 10 is just insanity.
His work with the misfit kids on the District 5 Pee-Wee Hockey team back in the 90s is the stuff of legend.

To me his best performance was in the outsiders tbh.

Why is Jerry West an option?

Great player, but I would have thought that Bird, Magic, Kobe, Curry, and Jokic would be options before West.

I think most people at the time had Oscar Robertson rated higher.

All the above players you mentioned were in goat thread 1/2, this is part 3 ... Oscar was in goat thread part 2 and he recieved only 1 vote.

People always going to be mad with polls no matter whos on there or not on there and no matter the subject, next to impossible to please everyone.

See you next week with new season in the gamethread

I've long thought the GOAT debate should be broken down among eras.

  • The Classic Era
  • The Post-Merger Era
  • The Post-Jordan/Post Hand Check Rule Era

at the very least break it down to before and after the introduction of the 3-pt line in the NBA.

The debates would be much less hostile and more nuanced (and interesting).

    Classic Era
  1. Wilt Chamberlain
  2. Lew Alcindor
  3. Oscar Robertson
  4. Jerry West

    The Post-Merger Era
  1. Jordan
  2. Magic
  3. Olajuwon
  4. Bird
  5. Julius

    The Post-Jordan Era
  1. Lebron
  2. Duncan
  3. Kobe
  4. Steph
  5. Durant

If you add a modern pace and space era - guys like Jokic and Giannis slide into the conversation as well.
Young guys can't really fathom how different the game is compared to older generations.
Defense is weaker today, and offense is more varied. But I'm hard pressed to say modern greats are better than the Post Merger greats...

It's interesting to note that LeBron, both in vote totals and in terms of percentage is closer to last place than to first.

I wouldn't say the discussion is over for LeBron, but extending his career hasn't done him any favors. One of the main things he had going for him was consistently reaching the Finals, and that Jordan actually missed the playoffs with the Wizards (he was old but so is LeBron so you ignore it or ding them both). Well, he missed the playoffs twice with the Lakers and only made the one Finals.

At this point unless he wins another championship he's only tarnishing his legacy.

Second best player of all time

Post#519 » by vagelis » Fri Oct 17, 2025 2:08 am

In every poll, Jordan is voted as the GOAT by a large margin.
So, if we exclude Jordan who do you consider as the second best player of all time?
I think that those ones(70%) who vote Jordan as the best player can go anywhere and the result can surprise or not.

It’s Lebron. Longevity, defense, rebounding, passing, scoring, championships, MVPs, Finals MVPs, beat a 73 win team…the only player who I think has an argument is Kareem, but he got outplayed by Moses Malone in the playoffs twice. I know LeBron was weak in the 2011 Finals but he followed that up with 2 championships with MVPs and Finals MVPs and Kareem was bested by Moses in 81 and 83.
