Giannis has been incredible, but he's also missed a number of games as well. It's the first thing people mention with Embiid, but they like to ignore it with anyone else, including Giannis. Giannis has also been load managing for the last 3-4 years, so this isn't a new thing either. People just like to pick what to focus on and what to ignore, and it's not the same standard for each player. Giannis has missed 3 games already this year, and Embiid 4.

He's not in the MVP discussion right now. His team's not good enough, but he is a monster at scoring at will.

Tatum with 27/10/1/3/3. 2nd game of his career with 3 blocks and 3 steals. He had a poor shooting night from deep. Only 1 turnover.

Giannis with 27/8/4/1/0, 7 missed free throws, 8 turnovers, and 6 fouls.

Celtics best record in the league.

You’re right. I had faulty memory after watching his buckets over again. Tatum contested once and trapped couple times, but didn’t get scored on specifically. But, defense doesn’t matter on SGA. Nobody in the NBA can slow him down even a little bit. Just his own games where he randomly goes passive and takes a night off. Brown was his primary defender and did nothing. Smart also guarded him 1 on 1 a bunch and got owned.

I mean it probably should be restarted at least 4 times (separate the season in to quarters). Mvp selections change pretty drastically based on injuries ext.

Or make it even funky-ER and have someone win mvp of first month or first 12 games or first quarter

But restarting and calling it part one negates the value of voting in the first place…. I should just wait for the last one and then vote

It's just a snapshot of how people are feeling at the moment. After a certain time the poll has to be reset because not everyone comes into this thread to change their vote every few games. How I'm voting and how I assume most people are voting is who would be MVP if the season ended today, if you're only interested in predicting the winner then yeah you could just as well wait for the final poll.

There shouldn't even be a poll until part 2 to be honest. Makes no sense to vote for something less than 5% into the season.

My man.. we are about 20% into the season lol. Most teams have played 14-16 games. But yea, the poll has some of the wrong guys by season end most likely.

Tatum is definitely top3 if not higher.
Team rankings are 50% of the awards, like it or not.

I think it's mostly about getting over .500 at least to be in the conversation, I don't see a way for a player on a team on a losing record to win MVP tbh. Having the best record in the league is always a big boost for someone though and if they're among the top individual players as well they're frontrunners most of the time. I'd still go with Luka for now but Tatum has been steadily climbing up to my 2nd place.

Interesting seeing peoples different viewpoints on the criteria and their relative importance. I’ve always assumed team record is a big factor. Personally I look at the following 5 criteria:

- Performance/ counting stats

- Efficiency (I.e 30 points and 10 assists on 41% FG and 7 turnovers a game doesn’t do it for me!)

- Team record (this can be more nuanced, and include team record relative to strength of supporting cast. E.G. Nuggets didn’t have a spectacular record last regular season, but Jokics ability to have them as almost a 50 win team in the west without his second and third star was huge)

- Availability

- Defensive impact (slightly lower importance, but can be a difference maker if there are two guys almost neck and neck in everything else)

Based on the above 5 criteria I have Tatum first in the MVP race currently, as I think he’s the only player so far who is ticking every box, and in impressive fashion too.

Steph leads the league in EPM on 70 TS%, surprising he isn't at least in the conversation here. I get that the Warriors are off to a slow start, but it isn't his fault.

If Sixers can string together more wins, Embiid is right in this.

I still have Luka no.1 because it's just impossible to overlook his start. After that, you could go in many different ways.
