I'd like to see Game 7 averages among the greats. I remember looking at all of Kobe's game 7's and it was a bit underwhelming. Granted he's only played in a handful of them.

Yeah, next to Bird, I always thought Stockton was the most cold blooded shooter of that era.

He was a killer. I learned that the hard way in that 1997 WCF series, if I hadn't known it before.

In 1997, I was active on the internet. Can't believe it's been 16 years. Around that point in time, the Rockets could not deal with the Seattle Supersonics. Had to do with how Seattle played defense against Hakeem.

Anyways, Houston managed to get by Seattle. And I was hoping Hakeem would finally get a piece of Jordan in The Finals. One big mistake, though. I overlooked the Jazz, and Stockton:

Bring on Utah. Monday could be ugly because of all the energy expended in this series, but I'm optimistic. I think that the Rockets are going to be ready to go and sharp after having won such a tough series. Mentally, they're going to be in excellent form for the rest of the playoffs. Just like George Karl said that his team gained a lot mentally after the Phoenix series, Houston has gained a tremendous amount mentally after this series. Has Utah gained that 'edge' yet that's needed in order to be an NBA Champion? I'm not sure, but we're about to find out. Houston has it now, and I personally couldn't be happier with the team's position in the playoffs now.

Answer? No, Utah did not have the 'edge' to be an NBA Champion -- at least not with Jordan around -- but they had more than enough 'edge' to beat my Rockets.

And that 'edge' turned out to be John Stockton, among others. Rockets (with starter Matt Maloney) had no answer at the point guard spot for Utah.

As a Laker fan, the Super Sonics were pesky but not I didn't see them as the legitimate threat Utah was... I hated Stockton with a passion... Almost as much as I hated Bird... Malone didn't worry me because like Weber later, you could always count on him doing something stupid in the big games.

Freaking Sonics. I used to get into it with Sonics fans on the internet newsgroups (like BBS's then) at that time. They played a trapping type of defense that would bother Hakeem. It was borderline illegal zone (illegal then), and Houston couldn't solve it.

So, I thought when Houston got by Seattle, everything was all set for another Finals run. Nope. Thanks, John Stockton. :(

Maybe I'm just not understanding what you're arguing. To put it bluntly game 5 in a series tied 2-2 is far mor valuable than game 4 in a series down 0-3 against a far better team.

I never said it was a horrible g4, and I'm not sure why you think I'm criticizing Lebron. I have only said that elimination games are not as important as closeout/swing games.

My bad playa, misunderstanding probably

I was going to do Carmelo Anthony, but shockingly enough, he has never played in a Game 7, ever! So I went with Dirk, and I was stunned, Dirk just balls in Game 7's.
As for the Game 5's that are mixed in, I didn't know whether or not to include them since they aren't technically Game 7's, but they give both teams the same condition of Game 7's in that, you either win and advance, or lose and go home. For those who think Game 5's shouldn't count, I did averages both with and without Game 5's mixed in. As for the bolded sections, that just shows where a player took over another players (best/highest) spot with the Game 5's mixed in.

All stats come from Basketball Reference.

Funny part is Lebron becomes more of a gunner in game 7 where as MJ is an amazing passer in game 7. Kobe 6-1 record is nice despite his stats.

Thank you, NBA4EVA2010, great effort from you.

Wow, Dirk is just... wow. Most rebounds in game 7's, fewest turnovers, probably highest TS% as well. Just amazing. Labeling him as a choker was probably one of the most ridiculous thing ever in sport history. He is literally the complete opposite of that, and was even before 2011. A handful of bad games out of hundreds, and he got that label. Meanwhile some other player who has terrible elimination stats compared to other all-time greats, gets labeled as the "assassin". Just utterly ridiculous, and obviously goes beyond the sport itself.

It seems Kobe is rarely ever the best player on the floor in elimination games.

3 wins 00-02 Shaq's their best performer

09' Pau puts up 21 points 18 rebounds and 3 blocks. W
10' Pau puts up 19 points 18 rebound and 4 assists, W
12' Pau puts up 23 points 17 rebounds 6 assists and 4 blocks, W

Pau has been HOFer worthy in those years.

Yeah, the Dirk "choker' label is mainly from 2 series (2006 Finals vs heat and the Warriors series) because other than that, he's been a beast!

Really interesting thread. However, to all the people that want to draw sweeping conclusions from this data, there's this thing called context.

Kobe was lucky enough to be on some pretty good teams before he came anywhere near his prime. Here are the ages of the players when their first elimination game takes place:

        Wade - 22
        Jordan - 22
        James - 21
        Bryant - 18
        Duncan - 22
        Malone - 22
        Stockton - 23
        Nowitzki - 22
        Iverson - 23

Are people incapable of understanding how Kobe's #s are lower when you're including games when he was a skinny teenager that still held delusions of having a rap career? Were any of these other players (besides Stockton) deferring to another all time great (there was this guy named Shaquille...) & not their teams #1 scoring option? Context people!!

Well, to fix that, just avg out the games you think are his prime and we'll see where his numbers stack up to the rest of the field

Why this kind of thread is always focusing on Kobe Bryant? It shows James Jordan Malone Wade Nowitzki Magic ... but most of you are talking about Kobe Bryant.
